Hey world!! hahah!! Seems like forever since I've updated. Whew! Everyone is getting more and more settled in each day. I think it helped tremendously that my now hubby (woo hoo!!) was enrolled in an ESL course (english as a second language) upon his arrival. This and a few other extended learning courses help to pass the time for him until he is able to work. He already speaks great English, the course just helps him further his vocabulary.

We were finally married last Friday and every day we are becoming more and more settled in. Today marks 19-days since their arrival. I am now starting to compile the paperwork for AOS. We applied for a SS # for my husband one week after his arrival. The SS office said that immigration misspelled his name upon his U.S. entry so it may delay things slightly. Super....blah! One thing that I didn't know, however, is that his daughter does not qualify for a SS # at this time (K-3 visas are ineligible unless they need a EAD). Huh, who knew?! ;-)

I am just staring to review all the papers and docs needed for the AOS process and wanted to check and see if the guides are still current? I know the K-1 guides were slightly outdated with the change to the DS-160 forms, etc so I thought I would check with the Visa Journey gurus just to be safe.

Anyway, hope all is well....I will update my timeline once the paperwork is filed of course.

Do the I-94s have the correct names? You can contact your nearest CBP deferred inspection site if you need them corrected. http://www.cbp.gov/document/forms/deferred-inspection-sites

Yes, a K-2 is not eligible for an SSN right away like a K-1 is. They need to wait for the EAD to get one. So, even though a child is young and won't be working, still apply for both the EAD and AP for them.

Yes, the AOS guide here on VJ is current, as are the example forms. Be sure to also read through the I-485 info at the USCIS site and of course all the form instructions.

My daughter was a K2 and we went to get her social after she got her GC. She didn't need it for anything in particular anyway so it wasn't too bothersome that I remember.

i'll get SS#'s for my 2 K2's once their Greencards have arrived. They don't need one for any reason currently and I couldn't be bothered putting in EAD's for them, my AOS package was already an inch thick...

I also called up the CBP defereed inspection site to have my first name on my I-94 corrected. All done in 5 minutes. Some mentioned that you might need to get an appointment to get the correction done in person. I guess it depends on the issue.

Btw, congrats and best wishes! :dancing:

Just logged on to check everything and his name is spelled correct. Also spelled correctly on the social security application so maybe either A) it's already been corrected or 2) the guy at the SS office was drunk.... KIDDING!! hahahaah!!! We are going to the SS office on Friday to get my new card w/ married name so we will check on the status of his card. Whew!! I'll update once we FINALLY receive the darn thing ...

UPDATE on progress.....

Called our local civil surgeon's office and the woman responsible for scheduling these appts was not up to speed on the requirements to say the least. I felt bad, but kept telling her she was not correct and maybe they should download the latest instructions. Hesitant to schedule with them but next closest office is 2+hr drive away. <<sigh>> She was absolutely sure that our medical exam would not meet the US requirements and would have to be completely redone at a cost of $600 each because Haiti does not operate up to U.S. standards. I told her in order for them to immigrate, it had to meet the US IMMIGRATION STANDARDS so not sure where she was getting her information. She ended the call stating that the Dr. would do whatever we needed but if we had to return they would charge us for the visit again plus any additional services needed. I told her I would talk with the Doctor and bring in the USCIS instructions with us to the appt. Superrrrrrr…… Anyone else run into this fun stuff?!? Blah!
