A University of Connecticut professor is defending his actions after being caught on video ranting at Christian evangelists, including spouting expletives and leading students in a “Praise Darwin” chant.

The spectacle, uploaded to YouTube April 23, shows anthropology professor James Boster aggressively confronting evangelist Don Karns, who was holding a sign that read, “Evolution is a lie.”

While it is unclear what preceded the academic’s yelling fit, he told WVIT-TV that it was his “moral duty to become outraged,” claiming that the Christian group was criticizing students’ ethnicity and sexuality.

Boster said he was simply defending students and trying to “engage them as cast members in the drama” he was creating.

The video, which was edited and posted by YouTube user 4ChristianNews, shows bits and pieces of what unfolded.

“He says that evolution is a lie! Have you read the ‘Origin of Species’?” Boster can be seen screaming at the start of the clip. “I have read the New Testament and the Old Testament!”

From there, the professor proceeds to yell and point his finger as he chastises the faith leader.

“Bullsh**! Bullsh**! You are full of ignorance and lies!” he continued. “I want you to feel ashamed that you are willing to call something a lie that you have never actually read.”

Karns later called Boster’s behavior “very unbecoming of a professor,” according to Charisma News.

Watch it all unfold below (Content warning: strong language):

In the latter part of the clip, Boster can be seen leading students in a Darwinian chant.

“I want you to join me in saying, ‘Praise Darwin!,” he said, and the students complied.

The video ends with Boster delivering a sermon of his own, speaking about mankind’s kinship with other mammals.

“We are all bonded together in that great spiritual web, because the divine saturates nature the way gravy saturates cornbread,” he proclaimed.

A call to Boster’s office at the university went unanswered.

In the WVIT-TV interview, the professor indicated that he might be in trouble with the university over the incident and that he has been summoned to the dean’s office.

The university said in a statement: “Everyone has the right to exercise free speech on our campuses. At the same time, we expect our faculty to act in a way that promotes civil discourse and to express themselves respectfully. The use of abusive language and the confrontational posture seen here are inconsistent with UConn’s values.”

Watch Boster defend his actions below:

Some religious leaders are taking issue with Boster’s spectacle, citing the fact that an assistant football coach recently resigned his position at the University of Connecticut one month after igniting controversy with a comment he made about keeping Jesus Christ at the center of his team’s huddle.

I care that the good professor is wasting his time trying to change a closed mind. <_<

or Vice-A Versa

I dislike encounters with dogmatic Christians and Dogmatic Atheist much for the same reason. (They are so much alike)

Yes the Pastor is an Idiot. So is the professor. If he thinks he is so much smarter than that guy, then why stoop to his level.

It shouldn't be that hard to find an evangelical preacher doing the same thing.

And of course the video failed to show what had occurred between the two before the professor launched into his low grade tirade.

It shouldn't be that hard to find an evangelical preacher doing the same thing.

Sure because a preacher would naturally be biased and lead by zeal and all that.

A well educated Professor, one would expect to display more confidence and carry himself with a higher respect for other viewpoints.

It would seem he is a stranger to "other viewpoints."

When he began to play pied-pipper and the students fell in line I began to wonder if he was a little drunk.... at that point his mannerisms suggested to me he might be on something.
