200 teens RIOT in Louisville Sat night robbing, assaulting people; Man claims victim of attack the night before

Riots broke out in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday night, according to WDRB News, when 200 teens began robbing and assaulting people, including a 13-year-old girl and a man trying to help her. A woman who was parked in her car with two children in the back seat said she was also assaulted by a group of teens. She told police they repeatedly punched her and threw trash cans at her car.

WDRB News also reports that a large group of teens robbed a convenience store, assaulting the clerk as he tried to shut the doors on them. They actually have surveillance video of this attack and all the teens shown appeared to be black.

Police say there were another three victims of assaults in three separate attacks that night and they all had to be taken to the hospital. The mayor is now calling for calm in the city.

While all of these attacks were on Saturday night, WDRB News caught up with a man who told them the attacks actually started on Friday night. He was out with this partner when a group of teens broke off from a larger pack and punched him in the back of the head, trying to knock him out. He said one of them actively tried to fight him.

It's from a security camera, showing people leaving an event (my guess would be a basketball game). They are walking by some empty, parked cars. Most of them simply walk on by until a lone individual jumps on a particular car and then a handful of other copycats followed. The local news station called it 'a mob', but they are clearly leaving some event, not just roaming the streets. If this was after a loss, this is not uncommon. Sports fans around the world riot during big events. The NCAA tournament is no different. In fact, jumping on a few cars is mild compared to what I've seen.

ETA: Okay, I'm near certain this was after watching the Kentucky-Wichita game. Perhaps one of those parked cars at Kansas plates or a bumper sticker of their rival.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- LMPD officers responded to numerous calls between 7:45 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. Saturday night involving a large group of teenagers.

According to police, around 200 teenagers were gathered at the Big Four Bridge when 12 people started assaulting and robbing a 13-year-old girl. When an adult male tried to intervene, the group turned on him.

Once police were called to the scene, officers dispersed the large group of teens.

Officials say that's when calls began streaming in for random violent acts and disorderly conduct throughout downtown.

According to a press release, at least three people were injured and taken to University Hospital for treatment.

Police say once the large group left Waterfront Park, 70-80 teens were reported to be causing a scene at the White Castle on 1st Street. Nearby, a woman reported a group of teens assaulted her while she was parked in her car. Police say her two children were in the car with her, as the suspects repeatedly punched her and threw trash cans at the car.

A group then raided Bader's Market on South 1st Street. Police say they took items off the shelves and assaulted the clerk as he tried to close the doors on them.

Police were then called to three separate assaults on 5th and Broadway, 6th and Broadway, and 3rd and Chestnut. Each victim in those assaults had to be transported to the hospital.

Police say this is not common for Louisville, pointing out that crime rates in downtown Louisville have dropped in recent years.

"With the exception of last night, our community usually is a safe place," said Police Chief Steve Conrad who described the outbreak of violence as "mob-like" behavior.

Conrad only knew of one arrest from Saturday's crime outbreak.

Police are still looking for suspects and ask that anyone who was either assaulted, or witnessed an assault, vandalism or robbery Saturday night call police. Information should be directed to the anonymous tip line (502) 574-LMPD.
