Downtown food mart employee recalls violent teen mob

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – We have watched him try to fend off teens from stealing in surveillance video from Bader’s Food Mart on Saturday night.

Alvin Mathew was working that shift with his wife. Neither of them was hurt.

"At first it seemed like just one or two teenagers then we looked up about 30 to 35 trying to run into the store,” Mathew said. “I tried to lock the door, but some of them had already got in. Some were already standing in the way I couldn't lock the door," Mathew said.

He said some of the teens warned him they would rush the door. Mathew claims he said it would only cause trouble for them in the end.

"Next thing I know, they try to rush me,” he said. “I was told a couple hit me. I didn't really feel it."

Mathews said his main concern was for his wife, and others they assaulted Saturday night.

"I'm not even really worried about my own safety. But my wife works here,” Mathew said. “They jumped on a lady in her car. For what reason? Cause she was there. And come on now, that's pointless. That's pointless, sad and pathetic.”

He has worked at this store location for about three months, and claims this is not the first time teens rushed the store.

"We had to call the police about two weeks ago for the same incident,” Mathew said. “It was warm. Next thing you we got a heard of kids trying to steal stuff."

Mathew hopes police and city leaders can figure out a way to calm things down before Thunder and other downtown events.

"I shouldn't have to worry about coming to work and, 'Oh ####### it's a Saturday night - teenagers are out.'” He said. “I got a whole summer to look forward to. What happens when it's a Monday night? Or a Tuesday night? Or a Sunday night? Are people downtown gonna be safe?

Teenagers joined the looting mobs that torched shops and fought police earlier this month because they were bored and they believed they could get away with it, according to research.

The first detailed survey of young people’s reaction to the disorder found one in five 12 to 18-year-olds were “angry” and “disappointed” by the scenes of violence in London, Birmingham and Manchester.

One in three blamed youths who were bored in the summer holidays, while almost half said they thought the rioters and looters had been emboldened by the belief that they would not be caught and punished.

The poll of 1,000 teenagers, commissioned by the inner city cricket scheme, StreetChance, also disclosed the levels of under age drinking and drug use, with 19% of those aged 12 to 14 admitting that they drank alcohol.

The same proportion of under-18s said their peers took drugs, while this rose to almost one third among 17 and 18-year-olds.

The poll was commissioned to coincide with the national launch of StreetChance, a scheme backed by police and the charity, the Cricket Foundation, which targets potentially disaffected youths in inner city areas to improve relations between different groups.

Wasim Khan, chief executive of the Cricket Foundation, said it was “no surprise” that boredom leads to bad behaviour.

“The survey clearly shows that young people in cities are crying out for positive activities during the long summer holidays,” he said. “Children need an outlet to channel their energies and a structured competitive environment like street cricket can help provide this.”

The poll of 1,000 people aged between 12 and 18 found almost a third (31%) of those in London said the riots occurred because young people get bored during their break.

About 46% of those polled said they thought the riots and looting took place because young people do not respect police, while 43% said they believed people joined in because they thought they would not get caught.

The StreetChance scheme, which began in London but will soon be launched across the country, is supported by Barclays Spaces for Sports.

Danno, here is a look into the psychological aspects of why teenagers sometimes behave badly if you are sincerely interested:

Juvenile Delinquency Theories

childhood behavior has a lot to do with a poor environment, disrupted socialization or inadequate parenting the biosocial theory presents the fact that we must also take into consideration their genes, because that is what ultimately makes everyone unique and makes all individuals react to their environment differently. For example, a kid with a pathological trait such as a disability, an abnormal personality, brain damage or low IQ may be at high risk for committing crime. This risk is then increased by environmental stressors such as failure in school, bad parenting, substance abuse and delinquent peers.

There are many major social factors that are believed to cause or affect delinquent behavior such as social relations, community conditions, and level of violence, poverty, and racial disparity. All of these factors play a huge role in the way adolescents see their lives and help them turn to delinquent behavior. There are numerous amounts of sociological theories that can describe different ways a child can become delinquent. Here are some of the ones that are most important.

Social Disorganization theory is when a community reduces the chances of advancement for the children. For example, schools have high dropout rates, high levels of graffiti, high poverty levels and so on. Residents in these areas experience conflict and despair and as a result they turn to antisocial behavior. Strain theory states that when an individual has goals or has wants that the economic mainstream creates desirable and is unable to achieve the goals set before them in a legitimate way, the individual will find alternative ways of achieving his/her goals, usually turning to criminal behavior. Cultural Deviance theories explain that due to the draining lifestyle of kids living in deteriorated neighborhoods they turn to social isolation and delinquent behavior. These behavior explained in cultural deviance create subcultures such as gangs and cults in which these adolescents join to feel accepted, loved and a part of a group. When a society is creating conflict for a youth to achieve success, these teen experience status frustrations because they are not allowed to reach goals set by the larger society. (Siegel and Welsh, 2012).

Parenting is only one aspect. Anyone who has been a parent of an adolescent knows the limitations that parents have on the behavior of your children. But assuming that we agree (yes, parenting is important) and you are in favor of policies that help families with young children, then which policies do you support?
