it is permissible to eat meat from the People of the Book (Ahl-e-Kitaab), i.e. the Jews and Christians

Unless you can get concrete evidence of where the Halal store gets it meat, it would be hard to know if it really is halal. The only thing you could do if you want it fresh and halal for sure is go to a farm, buy the live animals yourself and butcher them yourself. We have done that occasionally. We do have a halal store here in Grand Rapids, but it does seem like the meat isn't always as fresh.

There have been times when my husband has eaten meat that isn't halal and says Bismillah. He won't do this on a regular basis however, but I suppose that is subjective. Meat from McDonald's and other places isn't halal and probably isn't even very good for anyone considering the process their meat goes through (cleaning with ammonia or something like that).

That is our experience, take it or leave it. :)

You may go to http://www.zabihah.com/ (they also have an app for smart phone which you may download). You enter your zip code and it gives you a listing of all the halal meat shops/restaurants within your area. I personally try my best to eat Zabihah. I live in PA and we have farms and I have gone that route too. Fresh chicken has it's own awesome flavors. Costco sells halal too. Certain stores like PathMark (not sure if any of their locations are around you) also have a halal frozen food section with frozen halal burgers, hot dogs, nuggets, etc. I personally enjoy Al Safa frozen products.

There are certain remote areas within USA where it can be a pain to find any halal places around. One example is when I used to live in the MidWest. It can be gruelling and sometimes very expensive to try to go for Halal. I wish you all the best. And while it is your choice on how you do, what you do I would say that from an Islamic perspective it's Halal or nothing. I have asked many Imam's here in USA the ruling on this and they all told me the same thing. Hope that helps and wish you all the best!

Do you live somewhere where there is a big Muslim community? That will usually make a difference. Nation wide, I don't believe Costco sells halal, but they pay attention to local needs. Every Costco I have been to sells kosher chicken frozen. And our kosher laws are very similar to halal as far as the butchery is concerned.

I buy halal when I can, they sell it in the supermarkets here and we have several middle eastern markets where it's available. But when I don't have halal or if it isn't available he eats regular meat, well with the exception of pork.

I work with Muslim and Orthodox Jew families from time to time and obtained some info. I see you are in LA. Don't know which part though. A family from Syria I know shop here: Super Hayat market on 16904 Prairie ave Torrance CA 90504. (310) 370-5707. Kosher markets such Glatt market are located in Encino and West Hollywood (between Santa Monica Blvd and Fairfax ave). But easiest way to find out: use Yelp, search for "halal meat" in your area. http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=glatt&find_loc=Los+Angeles%2C+CA&ns=1&ls=43719fa9c621f1d4#find_desc=halal+meat

I am a USC. My husband is a beneficiary. Adjusted from E-3.
