My husband had an unpaid business loan and it was not brought up or a problem, but I would make sure to pay off those debts while still in America. I don't think Canada is like this, but my husband tells me he can go to prison in DK for not paying (I don't know if he is exaggerating a little, but they do take it quite seriously).

7/2019-12/2019 (Yes, 16- 21 months) Estimated time to interview MSP office.

Hi,

I have a decent job that pays more than 75k a year. My fiance who I am filing for has debt but is working towards fixing it. Will this have any affect on the petition? I am US Citizen, he is Canadian Citizen.

No affect

I agree that in most cases it wouldn't make any difference, but the phrase "has debt" probably includes some situations that might be problematic (debt owed to the government, for example, or debt linked to legal proceedings, or really enormous quantities of debt). What kind (and degree) of debt are we talking about here, and what is its current repayment status?

I know that France does a sort of fiscal "exit interview" for some emigrants, and unpaid debt is one consideration therein.

Another question I'd want to ask in your shoes is the role of that debt in determining a future US credit score, something (unfortunately) crucial for many aspects of life in the US. I know that if you marry a citizen with debt problems it can negatively affect your credit, but I have no idea of the consequences when the spouse is an immigrant.

POE: 4/16/15 in Minneapolis. Kept my wife and our three-Y.O. waiting in a windowless room with no toilet access for over an hour, then let them through without asking any questions.
But whatever: it's over!!!!! 13 months and 3 days from original priority date.
Green card: Accompanying docs stamped 6/16, but the card did not arrive until 7/2 (approx. 11 weeks after POE).
Now it's really over. Thank you so much to all of you at VJ who helped us through this ordeal.
