Hello all. I'm filing a CRBA for my daughter in the DR. I found pretty much all of the information need but I still need some clarification on one thing. As a US citizen here in the US, how am I supposed to submit my original passport with the CRBA if I won't be at the 1st interview?

From my understanding, they just want to look over the documents and if they need anything else we can bring them to the second interview. Will they accept a normal copy until I bring the original to the second interview or will it have to be certified by custodian of record?

Either send them your passport, or send them a copy of the frist page (with the picture) and have it notarized.

It's amazing how many questions can be resolved with a 2 minute Google search...

You only need a copy of the passport and it has to be notarized. It only takes one interview and you're told immediately if its been approved or not so make sure all the required paperwork is taken.

I took my husband's passport and a notarized copy, they only wanted to see the notarized copy because it's what they keep

I just feel some type of way about mailing my passport off to a foreign country. I'm pretty sure I'll have to do the second interview. My daughter was born out of wedlock. However, my name is on the birth certificate, we were residing in the same location during conception, and I do have pictures for additional proof. I think I may be better off just getting the entire passport certified/notarized and sending that. On the 2029 form it says that "you must submit the ORIGINALS or copies certified by the custodian of record. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.

This is what I found on "copies certified by the custodian":

This procedure is correctly termed, “Copy Certification by Document Custodian.” In this procedure, the copy of the license or passport is being certified by the document custodian – the individual who is in permanent possession of the document, i.e. the client – not the notary. The notarization would proceed as follows:

  • The document custodian – client – will present a request to have a copy of his or her U.S. or foreign passport or driver’s license certified. It is always good if the verbal request can be accompanied by a written directive.
  • The document custodian will make a photocopy of the requested document to be certified and present it to the notary. In this case, the notary should not be the one to make the photocopy.
  • The signer will present an affidavit attesting to the fact that the attached copy is a true copy of his or her passport or driver’s license.
  • Depending on the state, the signer or the notary will select or attach the correct notary certificate containing jurat language to the signer’s affidavit statement.
  • The notary will issue an oath to the signer, having previously identified him through acceptable ID methodology.
  • The signer will swear or affirm that the attached copy is a true and correct copy of the license or passport and then sign the affidavit.
  • The notary will complete the notary certificate by signing and stamping it

If your daughter was born out of wed lock you may want to wait until you are there. Odds are good that without both parents present in this case you will be denied. There is only one interview. If your not approved you have to start over. Or if they request a DNA test you'll have to travel down there anyway.

If you want to proceed a notarized copy done in the US should be fine. You can just send your passport with fedex or dhl. They ship passports all the time.
