Please I will need your candid advice on this. I have my k1 interview on the 26th of nov here in lagos nigeria. My fiancee is a final year medical student who will be graduating in may 2014. That is to say she hasn't been working and only depends on student loan. However,I have an uncle in.the states who promised to sponsor us. He earns 70,000dollars annually. He also promised to furnish us with 2000dollars monthly for six months. Is that ok ? Any red flag?

if he did not fill out any I-134, then you should refactor your plan.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

That 2k throws up a red flag for me. 70k a year equates to $5833 a month gross, using a payroll calculator (http://www.paycheckcity.com/calculator/salary/result) he might take-home $3850-4000 a month. He's offering to give you half or more than half of his monthly salary? I agree with Schynam - don't count on that, he's going to have his own responsibilities. Hopefully he has savings.

That said, he's over the poverty threshold to act as a co-sponsor (http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-864p.pdf). If he fills out the I-134, that should be enough for the government.

Over the poverty threshold depending on how many dependents he has in addition to the two he would be taking on with the co-sponsorship.

Over the poverty threshold depending on how many dependents he has in addition to the two he would be taking on with the co-sponsorship.

It's true, with a salary of 70k, you only exceed the threshold if you have twelve or fewer people in your household.

Well surely don't go into an interviewing telling what he has promised. He makes enough for sponsoring so thts enough for a I-134. No read flags medical students petition all the time and well she is a future earner.

The Embassy doesn't care (and doesn't need to know) what your uncle promised you - it's completely irrelevant to the process. Have him fill out the I-134 (along with your fiancee) and provide all the supporting documents.

The K1 journey:                                                                                                                             The AOS journey:

11/09/2013 - I-129F Packet mailed to Dallas Lockbox                                                                                         06/22/2015 - AOS packet mailed to Chicago Lockbox

02/14/2014 - Case shipped to Embassy, where it waited for over a year at my request                                 11/07/2015 - AOS approved (EAD and AP had already been approved) - there was no interview

05/21/2015 - Interview - Approved

06/19/2015 - Wedding (L)

The ROC journey:

10/12/2017 - ROC packet mailed to VSC

01/21/2019 - ROC Approved - there was no interview

The N-400 journey:

02/16/2020 - N-400 application filed online

02/21/2020 - Paper NOA received in the mail

03/13/2020 - Biometrics

02/02/2021 - Interview & test - Approved

02/05/2021 - Oath Ceremony

Im assuming the beneficiary is the one who said he has an uncle in the states who is going to support him. I would therefore assume, the said uncle is Nigerian. How many Nigerian families do you know? I know a ton, including my husband, and almost all of them have nearly if not more than 12 members of their family. 12.

I haven't met any Nigerian family in the US in 30 years here who has more than 6 total in their family.

Obi, just do the regular affidavit of support normally.

No real red flags based on what you've shared so far.

Travel to Boston, MA and I'll introduce you to several. And let me introduce you to my husband, who is the middle child in a family of 10. I don't know why people get so defensive when a simple consideration was pointed out. geezzz smh

It was just something to point out, yes 70,000 seems like it would normally be enough to satisfy the affidavit, but you can never tell. Aside from that, I don't know many Nigerian families with less than 6 (as someone pointed out)...my husband is one of 10, my ex is one of 11. (just to name 2).

Sorry, it seems I offended you (again) in trying to cover all bases regarding the posters question. I'm not sure why you show such bitterness in my comments or why you take such offense to them. I find it VERY hard to believe you haven't met a Nigerian family with more than 6 children in over 30 years. MYY goodness. I used to think you were pretty informative and experienced considering the hoops you had to jump through to bring your spouse to the States, but now I question your accuracy in what you say. 30 years really? hmmm....
