What a great way to get around a problem! I think that is one of the hardest things for men in particular is feeling they aren't able to work and earn. My fiance, while he does speak English, is a pastry chef and has also done a lot of landscaping and horticulture work. I need to get him to go around and take some photos of the jobs he has done. A picture speaks a 1,000 words!! :)

Best of luck to you both!

Good for you and your husband.

Tiler is a skilled trade and skilled tradesmen of all types are in short supply in the construction industry. Once your husband gets a little US experience and a solid reputation for workmanship, he should not have to face being out of work again.

Best of luck to you both. :)

Ditto Pooky. Ingenious, resourceful, and arguably brilliant.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

So....I asked him, do you have pictures of your work? He contacted his brother, who emailed 90 digital photos! They had done tile on walls, floors, bathrooms, patios, steps, you name it, in ceramic tile, marble, granite, also natural stone. Hubby knows how to do all the jobs related to tile setting. I knew a little about what he did, but not enough to write a resume, until I saw the pictures! So I got an idea. I asked him to tell me about what he did, and I would write the resume. We googled words and tools and hubby studied until he memorized the English words. I kept the resume simple and direct. We chose the best pictures and put them in a folder. Then I googled flooring companies in our area. The very first company gave him an interview and hired him on the spot! He is now on his second day of work. He was hired as a helper but the guy he is helping could see my hubby's experience, and already let him set some of the tiles. Hubby also has the chance to learn other flooring methods. This has turned into a good opportunity for him. He is so happy to be working now! And pictures truly are worth a thousand words.

What an inspiring story! Thank you so much for sharing and all the best for you guys!

My husband spent the summer fixing the house. He offered and I agreed because the repairs have been sorely needed for 10 years. The additional benefit was that he could become familiar with wood-frame construction (as opposed to the brick and concrete construction in Kosovo). It also took some time before he got his driver's license. The test was extremely difficult, especially with the language barrier, and the US has many more road signs and lane markings than they do in Kosovo. So anyway...hubby got his license and started applying online. Time was passing, only one call, but the phone interview was confusing so he didn't pass. Hubby was getting down. My husband said back home he would hop on a bicycle and stop at businesses and ask for work. But here everything is too spread out. It was intimidating. Where to go? Where to drive? How to write a resume when he only worked with his father and brother? How to write a resume when he only knew the Albanian words for what he did and the tools he used?

So....I asked him, do you have pictures of your work? He contacted his brother, who emailed 90 digital photos! They had done tile on walls, floors, bathrooms, patios, steps, you name it, in ceramic tile, marble, granite, also natural stone. Hubby knows how to do all the jobs related to tile setting.
