At first my family and friends were truly stunned by my wanting to get serious with a woman who was thousands of miles, not to mention oceans and continents away. Many suspected she was just trying to get a green card and would dump my @ss as soon as she has it.

It's taken some time to convince them otherwise. Thankfully most of my family and friends have come around. My mother is now 110% behind me. My best friend finally came around recently.

Who here has had issues of family or friends thinking you are just  ?

In the beginning ...

1. My brother thought I had finally lost it when I 'found love through the Internet.' He felt I spent way too much time at my computer, and I needed to get out more.

2. My grandmother didn't even know what the Internet is (bless her heart).

3. Husband's mother was shocked and did not approve at all (this was before she met me in person). In her own words to him, "Why can't you find a decent Hoosier girl?!"

Two years later ...

1. My brother regards my husband like his own brother, and is even very concerned about our welfare.

2. My grandmother still has no idea what the Internet is but I can hear the smile in her voice when I call her once a month to tell her I am well and healthy.

3. Mother-in-law and I get along VERY well. She has become my confidante in the past year. I turn to her very often for sound and logical advice. And she looks out for me.

:)

Love doesn't recognise miles or culture...I am in love with a Canadian...and I wouldn't have it any other way. Joel and his love is worth every bit of stress, every piece of paperwork, everything that has been done so far...that and more. (L)

He is my whole world...plain and simple :luv:

I just think you're crazy because you went to France to meet a girl you met on the internet who lives in Vietnam. It must take you hours to explain that to your Grandparents, not to mention her explaining it to her Grandparents. Think of the old people, Matt. Think of the old people.

Neither of us have had any issues with our family thinking we were nuts for wanting to be with each other

We have had the support of both our familys. Which I am very thankful for.

When Dave decided to visit me for the first time, I asked my parents " I have a special friend from the internet.... he's actually my boyfriend and we want to get married if we still like each other this much when we meet in person... Can he spend one month here with us? My parents and my sister said that it wouldn't be a problem and that they'd like to meet him too. I actually believe that they didn't think it was a very serious relationship.

When Dave got here everyone loved him, but my dad got jealous because.... well, because he's my dad! :)

I come from a big family with lots of cousins, aunts and uncles and we're all very close. So they did worry about me moving to another country and they sure wanted to know how good Dave was. So he stayed one more month to get to know everyone better..... then one more month, one more, one more.... well he ended up staying for 2 years!

But they have always liked him very much and the only thing they didn't like so much at first (my grandma still doesn't like that idea  ) is that I'll live so far away from here. :(

His family and friends treat me very well and I feel so loved when I talk to them... they all want me to get there as soon as I can! I actually think they love me more then they love him!:lol: I'm just kidding!!!!!!!!

But there's a person that I have to mention here that has always helped me through everything, the person that told me from the start that she'd be on my side and that never let me cry alone when things got tough.... My mom! She has always supported me and I can only thank her for being my super mom! :luv:

I have basically heard anything and everything from my family. My friends have been pretty cool and I only has got a couple remarks from my co-workers. I just figure that everyone is jealous! :P Now that my parents know I am totally serious and that my fiance will be hear soon, they have shut up and now that they will listen to me talk about him they are starting to like him!

It's a miracle my parents let him come here in the first place, I mean, I was only 16 when he came to visit!

I still get looks from people when I say I met him on the internet. Once I say 6 years ago they tend to be like, o ok, he isn't some guy you met a month ago and could be some weird stalker :P

The two people that expressed the most concern was Jerry's sister and my brother, with Jerry's parents not far behind. My brother -- well, he's just naturally suspicious (:P) and Jerry's family were skeptical of him meeting someone on the internet, after getting out of a bad marriage. Fortunately, after we all had a chance to meet, everyone could see why I loved Jerry and why he loved me, so we didn't have to explain anymore.

When I say I am moving to Arizona to get married people ask how we met. When I say online I get the looks of OMG!! A lot of people still think everyone online is an axe murderer.

My mom would not even listen to me when I talked about Casey until just before he came to see me 5 months into our relationship.

Now my friends and family are all very supportive and love him.
