London Interview - List of Typical Interview Questions

Having been through the interview process about 3 months ago, I found checking the interview reviews useful. The most interesting was checking the types of questions they ask. Therefore, I have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions at interview. I hope you find this useful.

Remember, the interviewer wants you to succeed. There are no questions designed to trip you up or catch you out. They are just questions that most couples in a genuine relationship will know the answers to (although I did have to ask my fiance to remind me of where he went to college - we had even driven past it and he'd pointed it out but I still forgot). The interviewer does know the answers to most of the questions they ask - they are looking to see how you respond and your body language rather than the detail of the answer.

So - here is the list - please feel free to add to it to help other people who are after you in this process:

• Where did you meet?
• How did you meet?
• How did your relationship progress?
• And what attracted you to them?
• When did things get serious?
• When did you start talking about marriage?
• How did the proposal happen?
• How many times have you visited?
• How many times have they visited?
• Where were they born?
• Where do they live now?
• What did they study in college?
• Which college?
• Which subject?
• What grade did they get?
• Where do they work? What is their position?
• Do their parents still live there?
• Have you met their parents? What do they do for a living?
• Do they have siblings? If so, what are their names and ages? Where is your fiancé/ee in the line-up? What do they do for a living?
• Do you get on with their family?
• Has your fiancé/ee been married before? If so, why did the marriage end?
• When do you intend to fly to the US?
• Why are you moving to the US rather than them moving to the UK?
• What are your plans for the wedding?
• What kind of work do you hope to get in the US?

Sorry - I made a typo in my post - it should have been:

Some questions they get from scanning your petition and other forms as you walk back from the front lobby.

What does he do for a living?

Where will you live?

How many times have you been to the US?

Some, I think, are to protect the beneficiary and make sure they have been told their fiance's past--

Has she ever been married?

Does she have kids?

They wouldn't want you to move over and...Surprise! Find you will have five step-kids and are hubby #6.

Think of it as a conversation. If you don't know...say "I can't remember". If you didn't have a formal proposal then say "we just kinda decided somewhere along the way that we wanted to be married". Just chat them up.

One of my favorite interview stories was a guy--

"How many times have you been to visit her?"

"I dunno. LOTS."

I was asked none of those questions, not normal to be quizzed so in London.

They normally ask you around 3 or 4 questions - not the entire list! The most common out of the list I've seen are 1) How did you meet? and 2) When did you start talking about marriage?

And I agree with Nich-Nick - it is done as a conversation. Not questions just fired at you but a question that starts a conversation.

I got stumped on a question that was pretty obvious - "Why are you guys settling in the U.S and not the U.K?"

I actually hadn't thought of this question and I must of had a look of 'omg I don't know how to respond the that' on my face. The reason for that was because my fiance is much more settled in the States, what with his job and apartment lease. I just finished up school and was living at home so it just made sense for us to live in the U.S for a bit. I think on the day of the interview I just blurted out "oh, y'know, it was just kinda the easiest option!" - LOL! It didn't cause any problems but I probably should have prepped for that question. I mean it took us 3 years to decide what was going to happen and which country we planned on residing together in - I feel like my answer was a bit sloppy really, and could have been interpreted in a negative way.

I even got a question wrong - where does his sister live? Got my States confused and named the one his parents are in, not her. Husband corrected me (he was there with me). No big deal made of it.

London is usually easy, but it can't help to be prepared. I got quizzed and asked the majority of the questions in that list, and more. He didn't seem suspiscious in any way, he just seemed like he took his job very seriously, was thorough, and fussed a little over the support issue. He even stopped for about a minute mid interview while he "put some notes in".

I would advise anyone going to the interview to be prepared just in case. Me and my fiance had printed out a list of common questions from the interview reviews and went through each one, us both asking each other the questions through the list top to bottom. It helped me feel more prepared and one he repeated to me a couple of times (his high school) came up, and although I nearly forgot, I twigged because we'd done it the night before. The interviewer even congratulated me for it and said most don't know.

I can't wait to see what questions hubby gets asked this time around...he's already had his green card once before. We've been married for almost 7 years, known each other 10, and this is our second go around with US immigration.

As with this thread and most of the reviews, my fiance had most of the same questions as everyone else (Interview 17 Sept.). There was only one notable exception, and it wasn't a generic question to ask of anyone but only those in our particular circumstance. They asked her how her family felt about the age difference. She was 27 to my 44 when we applied. I've met her parents, brother and grandparents and get on well with all of them, so it wasn't a problem at all, just though I'd throw it out there, that although age wasn't an issue in obtaining the visa, the large gap did bring a unique question to the interview.

My fiance had his interview today..he said that they asked him how we met and he told them the story all the way up to where we are now, so impressed the woman interviewing him smiled and asked him to write my full name down and after that she told him he was approved So only one question. I'm guessing that depending on the person who interviews you and how you present yourself is how they ask their questions.. which is awesome but me and my fiance spent hours going over questions lol..oh well!

I have printed off the list from the OP and Bob and I are going to go through it on Skype at some point. Actually pretty excited about that, haha. Feels like a nice proactive thing to do during another indefinite amount of time waiting!
