I setup an old inactive android cell phone for my fiance using a free US phone number from Google Voice and a free app called Talkatone. Now she has a cell phone with a US phone number with free talk and text that works anywhere in the world with a wifi connection. The sound quality is usually good, and the free texting is nice.

And or course, we use Skype for video. I also have a Skype subscription for unlimited calls to Greece land lines, and the sound quality is usually pretty good.

What services/methods do you use?

Skype to go. Its the best deal by far. I pay a 5 euros subscription to the US, which includes calls to landlines and cell phones. Skype to go gives me a local greek landline telephone number that I can call my husband on his cell phone and on his landline.

Its alot cheaper than buying a subcription for calls to Greece.

I was told that you could use Google Voice on an iPhone as a VoIP phone service, but then when I tried it, the "fine print" said that it would take the minutes out of my actual plan, so I didn't bother *shrugs*

When calling internationally, we use Skype. Or if it's an emergency (say, someone should be heading to the airport but he's probably not even awake yet whistling.gif ) and I can't get through via Skype, then I just pay the per minute charge from my provider.

When my fiance is visiting, he uses his TMobile SIM card on his iPhone and buys a prepaid plan. It's $30, 100 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited internet (it's actually the same plan I use every day). The added bonus is that he's already set up when he moves here.

It doesn't use minutes if you set it up with Talkatone, but it does use data. You must to use the Talkatone app for the setup I described. The phone I configured isn't even activated so it definitely doesn't use minutes, only a WiFi connection.

Okay I think I get you know. I'm currently setting up the app so I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the advice!
