The issue will go away now, there will be no repeals of SYG in any state which has it, and there will be no Fed prosecution of GZ. There will be no more demonstrations...the bg weekend has passed. There was no violence except in some gun free zones.

I agree, in part.

I agree there probably will be no federal prosecution of GZ, it is a high burden to prove intent.

Nonetheless, with some Republicans and Democrats asking for a review of SYG laws, I think some amendments will be made. They may not outright repeal them in all states, but I think it is very possible they will be amended to some extent and rightfully so.

There is a lot of common-sense support for the notion that a person shouldn’t be found guilty of a crime if they act in self-defense.

Despite this, SYG laws could be dangerous to some degree, primarily because the laws could be too vague. Right now, there’s no absolute standard in these laws to make a definite determination as to when you are in danger of death or great bodily harm, and the law seems likely to encourage paranoiacs to misread and escalate any type of situation. This is the reason why we rely on paid police officers to defend us, rather than arming a bunch of jittery citizens and telling them to use their best judgment.

Why do we want to live a war zone, whereas everyone is free to make their own judgment calls?

Take the case of Michael Dunn, a white man who fired a pistol into an SUV filled with black teenagers in a Jacksonville parking lot, killing 17-year-old Jordan Davis. Though the confrontation began when Dunn asked Davis and company to turn down their music, Dunn claimed that he only fired after the car’s occupants menaced him with a shotgun. Police have found no evidence that the occupants were armed. Dunn is expected to invoke stand your ground.

What the Dunn case shows is that stand your ground can give people tacit permission to be more reckless and confrontational than they otherwise might. These incidents will only continue to increase and therefore I fully understand why some are asking for a simple review of these laws. Not an outright repeal, but a review and/or more clarification to avoid unnecessary conflicts.

I don’t buy the argument that the world will be safer when people are allowed to pop off a round whenever they spot trouble in their rear-view mirrors. And I disagree with the idea that law-abiding citizens shouldn’t ever have to retreat in the face of danger. The real world is not a Death Wish movie. It does not need more hyper-aggressive vigilantes who see it as their responsibility to take back the streets. It was conflicting evidence in the GZ's case, therefore, I believe a trial should have taken place, at the bare minimum.

What evidence was conflicting? This case was pretty cut and dry that's why GZ wasn't even charged in the first place.

First, some of the witnesses to the incident were not even interviewed until weeks later and AFTER GZ was released.

It was conflicting testimony as to who was on top during the fight, who was screaming on the phone, the route that Trayvon took, what reasons GZ was following him, etc, etc.....

Again, too much conflicting evidence for not even a trial or arrest to take place.

At end of the day, an unarmed teenager was shot and killed.

We can agree and disagree on who was right or wrong in this altercation, but it was far from a cut and dry self defense case.

And yes, no charges were made that nite.......but officers were disciplined for their actions that nite as while. You can argue this discipline was political, but others will argue it was faulty police work.

Nonetheless, at the end of the day, too much conflicting evidence and facts for any immediate decision.
