i'm in TX now .....T Minus 6 days on wedding..........but am a bit concerned about something thats happened....my father in law (well soon to be father in law) seemed to drive us to the marrige licencing place very shortly after i arrived.....now on the instructions that i'm looking at today.....well firstly on the forms we filled in at the marrige and licencing building they asked for both mine and hers SS numbers....but i at this point did not have one (still dont but have about 97% of the form filled in).....

is it a major mistake or....

Good luck for you again. I live in Texas and know the marriage rules.

So did you get the license while you went the first time or just bring the application home? Anyway, as explained to me at the county clerk's office--if you have a Social Security number, then you must give it on the form. If you don't have a SSN, then not required. Both people present photo ID. You can get a marriage license with only your passport. She can use a TX driver license or her passport.

You must have the license 36 hours before the wedding. If you don't have it yet, then hurry up.

After the wedding, get the minister or officiant to sign the license and give it back to you. Most offer to mail it in. You take care of it yourselves. Go in person back to the county clerks office to turn it in. Tell them you will wait while they record it and prepare your marriage certificate. Ask for a certified copy. That is what you will photocopy for your immigration forms. It will have a stamp or seal from the county on it.

Get your social security number as soon as you can. It is not needed to marry or file for your greencard, but is useful to have. If you wait too long, they won't give you one until you have your work authorization card or greencard.

Thank you...that puts the anxiety down somewhat.....yes heres wgat happened: we went in to the license building and for some reason after dealing with two people and paying for it....we then left....without a certificate........they then phoned the house who then phoned the van that was coming to pick us up....and then we had to go back in through security a second time.....and then emerged a second time with a license certificate.....i dont think our heads are fully screwed on. EDIT: seem to have typed that in the last message.

Although to be fair we both left the building believing it was time to leave and with the best possibly intentions.

but.....moving on :)

thank you....yep not long now!

you know section 9 B and section 10B on the SS-5 form......do i really tick unknown?....it seems a bit odd.

instructions seem to say so though

9.B., 10.B. If you are applying for an original Social Security card for a child under age 18, you MUST
show the parents' Social Security numbers unless the parent was never assigned a Social Security
number. If the number is not known and you cannot obtain it, check the “unknown” box.

it has the exact same amount of boxes as a national insurance number....but i don't suppose i put both parents national security numbers into these boxes?

Social Security has no need for a NHS number. This form is used mostly by Americans getting a SSN for their children. Mine got theirs when they were infants. So don't take that part as written personally to you requiring a number.

If you don't know how to fill it out, then let the person who calls you up to the window assist you. At the SS office when we went, the lady ignored the form and just typed the info straight into the computer by asking name, birthdate, etc.

thank you......that was meant to say national insurance number.......blink.png

You did say that and I called it NHS. Sorry, I'm American and national health service and national insurance all kinda blend in my head. The point is--

The Social Security Administration in the US does not need a United Kingdom number of any sort from you or your parents.

And you've got a second person saying the actual form did not seem important to the SSA worker. The form was discarded for my husband in TX and for Vanessa in Iowa. It is what they type into the computer that counts.

Review the long explanation in this thread of what to take with you and to ask for a supervisor if you have trouble getting a card.

Given that you're worried by the process, I recommend you take a copy of the form with you, as well as the original. That way, when they ask you to confirm the information they have input for their records, you can take your time to check it against what you wrote on the form beforehand, instead of getting flustered.

ok having some upsetting times over here......and wanting to know what wait too long means....in days....how many days past port of entry is a wait that is too long on visiting the SS offices to get a SS card.....I am keen to go and get one ASAP.... but my other half is not....we have no car though...and live in a remote rural location.

76 days. That means two weeks before your I-94 expires.

on the actual wedding day we noticed that there was no lines for the two witnesses to sign their name on....which everybody said was odd.

I also married in Texas. No witnesses are required. Only the officiant has a place to sign the license giving date and time and his title I believe. Date and time are required because it can't be sooner than 72 hours from the license issue or more than 30 days from issue. A judge can waive the 72 hour requirement.

Adjustment of Status is starting all over. You got your visa in London under the Dept of State. Everything you did so far was just to get a visa. That's done. It is over and the visa became invalid the day you used it to enter the US.

Now you will go back to USCIS to apply for a greencard. New forms, new rules, new people looking it over, some repeat of things already sent but the new people aren't going to dig through your old file to find a birth certificate for example. There is a new Affidavit of Support (I-864) so getting back the London I-134 would be useless.

Now the London specific things are over, so you will use this forum to ask questions http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/7-adjustment-of-status-green-card-from-family-based-visas/ because all K1s adjusting status do the same forms.

If you back up in this thread to post 27, I gave you a link to my list of what is sent for AOS. Bookmark it and print it as a guide so you don't leave anything out.

Ask your questions about the forms in the Adjustment of Status forum http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/7-adjustment-of-status-green-card-from-family-based-visas/
