Boston Bombing Evidence Blocked by NRA Lobbying Efforts

Investigators pursuing forensic evidence in the Boston Marathon Bombing case have already determined that the devices used consisted of gunpowder packed into at least one pressure cooker along with pieces of metal, nails and ball bearings.

Were it not for the repeated efforts of the National Rifle Association, authorities could trace the manufacturer and possibly even the chain of custody of the gunpowder used to kill three people and injure more than 170 on Sunday.

Thanks to lobbying by the NRA, explosive makers are not required to place tracing elements called taggants in gunpowder. Plastic explosives and non-gunpowder detonators are all required by law to contain these tracing elements.

On two occasions over the past five decades lawmakers attempting to mandate the use of identification taggants have run into a buzz saw of disinformation distributed by gun lobby supporters falsely claiming the microscopic color-coded particles would somehow impair performance.

Why do you need to trace the gun powder?...You have the unexploded device,you have the bomber.you had the FBI aware of the bombers years ago. The FBI certainly had a file on this person along with a photo.The FBI are the ones who screwed up rather than the NRA. We have a person of interest in a photo taken at the bomb site and have no idea that they (the FBI) interviewed him. In connection with a possible terror link in the city of Boston.

What if these two men are part of a larger cell?

The FBI will already backtrack all the weapons they found from the manufacturer to the last reported sale and perhaps beyond. All that apparent minutia will help to reconstruct all the events leading up to the death of the older brother and the capture of the younger brother. That information could possibly lead to more individuals that may be involved. If they thought the capture of the younger brother ended the affair, then they would have already charged him, and he would be lawyered up by now, awaiting arraignment.

What purpose would it serve to know who the manufacturer was? Doesn't seem any of this was necessary to capture the suspects. I am going to guess that within a week they will know where the gunpowder was purchased. So what?

Obviously what we need are more survellience cameras in society, perhaps in public restrooms and in all public places. All people should be monitored by the government wherever they go because that is how we caught them. Right?

Maybe the could profile the members of the Islamic hate group and trace them all down, and lead to more individuals that may be involved. But wait that would not be politically correct. Making sure the Feds can track every move and bullet a legal gun owner makes would be cool right ..

The article title is a bit disingenuous - it implies the NRA is actively lobbying to stop evidence in the current Boston case as opposed to it being a compromise made some time ago to get ground checks put into place.

No they don't - that was their end of the compromise (or a battle they lost). Back ground checks are in place but they can't computerize the sell and have to destroy the paper after I think 2 years.

I'm actually surprised it has stayed this way for so long it seems like such a stepping stone move.

Well, all those gun nutters are afraid the government will find out what kind of criminal activities they are involved in, and how crazy they really are. That is why they don't want to leave a trail leading back to their secret underground bunkers full of anti-government propaganda and various other kinds of contraband, where every weekend they engage in homoerotic rituals and prostrate themselves before their false gods, hoping their unsuspecting wives will never notice they didn't really go "fishing".

Could be they doubt the good will in people like yourself who just maybe have an axe to grind against them and seem just a tad bit judgmental.

I'm not smuggling state secrets or funneling in child porn but I still don't want the government demanding that they inspect my flash drive when I travel through the airport and insist they need my encryption password so they can see what is there.. They have done this to other people.. There is a line where it becomes intrusive.. I don't know if having the government having an organized list of gun owners is crossing that line but the argument is valid enough that calling them "nutters" seems a bit over the top.
