Hi, everybody, thank you everyone for supporting us. Soon I am going to apply for ROC, and later on I was thinking of applying for my naturilzation. So what is going to happen if I decide that I don't want to become a US citizen and just want to keep my own citizenship, can I just be on a green card for the rest of my life? Has anybody else done that? Thank you all and I hope you have a wonderful journey.

You can have both citizenships, thats not a problem, just make sure if you have to notify your own (original) country about it, some countries, (I believe Spain, India and if I am not wrong, also Germany) have a "period" that if after you become US Citizen you do not notify them that you want to keep your citizenship, they will take it away so, give a call to your Consulate and asked them about it. It should be an easy answer for them since they should go thru it almost every day.

If you decide to just stay a greencard holder, you will have to stay within certain "restrictions", the one that bothers the most its that you can not leave the country for more than 6 months, if you ever get arrested for anything, you are also putting in danger deportation and/or future citizenship... you do have to renew it every ten years, which means having to pay, submit evidence, wait, etc... also, consider the fact that laws can change and they may affect you without you even knowing and that little slip can cause you to also loose it...

I have 2 other nationalities, i'm planning on becoming a citizen at the end of this year and it will not affect me at all, actually, it will give me a lot more freedom to choose wherever I want to live...

Hope this helped you decide... and please, do not read only my post and take a decision based on it, read a few other threads about it.

Good luck!!

The above poster is wrong about the time out.

Yes you can stay an LPR forever if you wish, however as the above poster stated you will have restrictions, the same as you have right now. You cannot remain outside of the US for more than 12 months without a re-entry permit. Any period over 6 months can be used in determining if you've abandoned your status.

Romanians can have double citizenship. If you are a citizen you have social benefits upon retirement. If you stay as a greencard holder you do not.

Also as a citizen you can petition for your family if you plan to bring them as greencard holders

What if you get offered an amazing job abroad. As a greencard holder you can't leave the country for longer than a year.

It makes no sense to not become US citizen.

Mariana says you can and I would agree with what she said, also qualifies you for a government job. Maybe at USCIS so they have employees who have been through the system.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

Well you don't need to tell them about the US citizenship. However if you ever want to " sa te repatriezi" you need to have a stamp in your Romanian passport as " cetatean roman cu domiciliul in strainatate" and you need to give them your " buletin" . If you keep quiet about living abroad just renew "buletin" when it expires. Proof of Romanian citizenship is " buletin" you don't even need to bother with the Romanian passport after you get the American one. Edited by Mariana2012
