my wife's GC expired last month, but she now has her extension letter after we filled for ROC before the GC expired. We are traveling back to Indonesia in May, and we're a bit worried that her new GC won't arrive before then. Will we have any trouble getting back into the US with her expired GC and extension letter? has anyone here traveled with their extension letter and successfully re-entered the US? or has anyone had any troubles returning to the US?

Your problem will be in boarding the airplane for the return trip. Check with your airline as to whether they recognize the extension letter. There is a thread here on VJ where they had a copy of the extension letter--not the original-- and TAM would not let his wife board the airplane to return to the US. Most airlines that fly regularly into the US know about the extension letter, but checking might safe yourself some grief.

Good luck,

Dave

I agreed, you need to bring the original extension letter for that return flight. If you're leaving for the US via Cengkareng, you may have the airliner staff who can understand Extension letters. But if you're leaving via Surabaya, Denpasar, or Medan, they may not understand the procedures and just simply deny your wife to board.

My husband and I visited the Philippines in May last year. I brought my expired green card and the original extension letter. No one ever asked for my extension letter, not even when we arrived at LAX. We flew with Singapore Airlines.

Have a great Asian vacation!

I will also be traveling out of the country next month with expired green card and extension letter.

Make sure you bring the original letter not a copy and valid passport

I've heard people getting info pass appointments to get stamps in their passport but have heard that many people get denied the stamp, because the point of the extension letter is that it validates your GC for a year.

I Was paranoid about this at first too.

We did have to go to "secondary" screening but we were done in time for the flight. We went to Bermuda and UK and had no issue. We had to show the expired card, passport and the original copy of the letter to airlines and border control. I would recommend you make a copy of the letter for your files, scan and email it to yourself just so you have it but be sure to have the original with you for the agent.

Correct. In general it is not a problem and we never had a problem traveling on the extension letter to and from Canada, Russia, and Ukraine. However, SOME members have been reporting problems boarding flights on SOME airlines in SOME countries and the Pacific Rim area has been one of the problem regions.

Check with your airlines BEFORE you leave...or buy the tickets.
