POE last night - 3 hours long!!

We decided to POE last night. We aren't moving full time yet but wanted to get things finalized so we can get the kids enrolled in school and such.

We got to the border (driving through Fort Erie as we do every other week or so) at 6:00 and were in secondary by 6:10. The officer at the door actually LAUGHED out loud when he saw I had 3 visa packets with me. THAT was comforting. Sheesh.

We waited and waited and waited. 4 year old & 7 year old boys do not wait well in rooms that have nothing visually stimulating, where they aren't allowed to be rambunctious and aren't allowed to bring electronics into. It was really hard.

After about an hour, I could and officer had our passports in his hand. We were the only family/group of 3 and I left the stickers on them from the consulate. He worked for a while and then WENT ON A BREAK! He actually left our stuff sitting on his desk at his workstation and walked away. I thought he was going to ask a question or something... but he came back about 40 minutes later with a coat on and a beverage in his hand! I was very disappointed at this point. The kids were bored and starting to act like it which for little boys, means acting like turds! :P

At about the 2 hour mark he called me up. He apologized that he was taking so long and explained they are short-staffed. It wasn't that there were even a lot of other people there. The officers were just SLOW!

We did signatures and fingerprints very quickly. He told me the rest was on him to complete and that I could just sit until he was done. He asked me if I wanted to get anything from the car for my kids to eat so that was a relief. Usually once you're in, you're not allowed to go back out until they release you. He gave me a permission slip to go to my car. Once I could give the kids food they chilled out for the rest of the wait so that was good!

There were no hassles, no questions, no problems other than a long wait! 3 hours after arriving we were sent on our way with congratulations on now being permanent residents.

Frustrating? Yes. But what a relief to be done once we walked out that door!

Thanks, all. It was a very rewarding few days. Now I'm back in Canada to start the actual process of packing up and moving us permanently. We'll be down for a few days every other weekend and slowly dragging a car load of stuff each time. Then a truck in June me thinks.
