You know times are getting hard when they come to our community to advocate buying guns: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/russell-simmons/nra-black-community_b_2833548.html?utm_hp_ref=black-voices&ir=Black%20Voices

Fear is the greatest weapon used against the defenseless. It is one that makes a group of people believe in interests that are contrary to their very own preservation. It throws people off balance. It is a tactic that confuses the blurred minds of those who are in struggle. And right now, it is the best ammunition that the National Rifle Association can muster.

Just recently, the NRA has placed their bulls-eye on the heart of Black America with their new advertisement starring some black guy with a Yankees hat! Like Black guys wearing Yankees hats can have any success in this world! But with all seriousness, I find the message of this new video by the NRA deeply troubling, where the guy in the Yankees hat is advocating that our people arm themselves and fight the government (all under the banner of the NRA). Quite hypocritical of them, as during the Civil Rights movement, when the government was overtly oppressing our people, the NRA was quick to pressure legislatures across the country to get the guns out of the hands of the Black militants who were ready to fight back. I guess those weren't the "well-regulated militias" they had in mind when they read their version of the Second Amendment. But, now that we have a Black president, and we have made great progress in creating a more equal playing field in America (although we still have much work to do), the NRA is encouraging us to pick up guns again and start poppin'. With smokescreens and a barrage of bullets, the NRA is intentionally playing into the fears of very few people. Very, very few.

If the Democrats were started by the KKK and ran by them it would be, they were just part of the party. Once the Southern Strategy started, they went to the Dark Side so to speak.

More ignorance and racism as usual

The NRA has long supported the rights of African Americans. Heller was black and it was his case that went to the SCOTUS funded by the NRA Civil Rights Legal Defense Fund.

The NRA successfully challenged Indiana's discriminatory "may issue" law on behalf of a black man that was denied his right to defend himself by a racist Sheriff in Lake County, IN and also sued the state of Alabama for discrimination against blacks in issuing concealed carry licenses. Alabama STILL has a "may issue" law but the opinion of the State's Attorney to settle the lawsuit is that licenses should be issued to ALL qualified applicants. They have been.

Long time President of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) Roy Innis and his son Roy Innis Jr., also a CORE President, were NRA Directors. CORE has been a strong supporter of African Americans RIGHTS to own firearms and be FREE from when the Democrats were the party of the KKK. I do no think these men would have served the NRA if the goals of the NRA were not sincere.

You haven't a clue what you are talking about regarding the NRA. Please educate yourself. You sound foolish.

Good grief

Racists have to declare racism to take the focus off themselves. They oppress an entire segment of the population with subsidies, welfare and the basic destruction of a once strong family unit and say anyone against their policies is a "racist"

They gerrymander districts to minimize the influence of racial minorities, and if you point it out they call you a "racist"

Take a read, this is what they are talking about. Funny how the NRA was all about gun control when the black panthers had them back in 1967. And soundly foolish, please, how's life on welfare going?

In the 60's Democrats stood on the steps of the University of Alabama with armed National Guard to prevent blacks from attending the school and declared "Segregation Forever!" Are you a Democrat? Democrats, including AlGore's father (the guy that invented the internet and global warming)and Bill Clinton's mentor, William Fulbright, filibustered the equal rights act and the voting rights act

Give it a rest Marvin. I am married to woman from a country that had WHITE slaves until 1867 and in which 22 million people, including BOTH her grandfathers, were murdered because they were "Slavs". Untermensch..."less than human" You have no exclusivity in race or experience to that of many European white people.

When you can discuss an issue without going immediately to some imagined oppression of race, then come back and talk. Until then you sound foolish.

Uhm - there was a period of time in which the NRA HELPED with state legislation guarantee-ing that African Americans would NOT be denied the right to purchase firearms.

Sure, it was a different time, with different focus, but ....

I see nothing wrong about it , this current video.... It's a marketing tool, to increase NRA membership.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I don't know why I even respond. This is coming from a person who thinks pro choice means you can discriminate against someone, and you call me foolish. The topic is about the NRA, not Democrats, so stay on topic please. But I have read what you, Darnell and a few others posted so let me respond:

The point behind this article was how the NRA fought hard back then to stop minorities from having firearms, what I found interesting was the Black Panthers used the Second Amendment exactly for it's prupose, a militia in case of a oppressive government.

If you want to talk about your wife Gary(we know you do) then start a thread about it.

I don't know why you bother, Marvin. You know how some people are, and nothing you say will change it. They want to spew their nonsense and not have it challenged in any way so they feel like they've "won" ... it's important to them and you're ruining it.

You know what Darnell, thanks for posting this. This is how you debate without the name calling and insults.

I think black folks are still mad about how things went down in the 60's but you're right, times have changed. I think the focus shouldn't be on government, but more personal safety.
