Greetings,

I (USC) filed for my wife's (Canadian citizen) I-130 and received my NOA1 on Nov 23, 2012. Since December, my case has been in the Initial Review step. By the way, my receipt number begins with MSC. I called USCIS today and asked about my case. The rep told me my case is at the Vermont svc center. They are currently processing June 4, 12 apps. I checked the estimated processing timeline for Vermont and it's currently showing 7 months.

My question is, what is this 7 months referring to? Is this referring to the time between NOA1 and NOA2? Or is it for the whole I-130 approval process?

Thank you and take care.

Don't just take their words with 1 call. You may want to call 2 or 3 times to confirm that your case is indeed at VSC. I could never get them to answer where my case was being processed. So just call few more times and confirm that they all say the same thing.

So I called back several times and was told that my case is at the NBC. Since NBC doesn't post I130 timelines they don't have any estimate of when my app will be processed. Any ideas on what I can do? It's coming up on 5 months and still nothing. I've seen several people on the forums here who applied beginning of 2013 and already got their NOA2. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Then I'd bet that is where your case is. Most NBC (case number starts with MSC) have gone to local offices. You can search the USCIS website to be sure of your local office (ours was Denver) and try to find people on VJ who have the same local office. You can also make an infopass appointment and talk to someone at the local office to see what the timeline might be.

Hello, I am the petitioner and my local office would be Detroit since I live in Michigan.

nikir is right about the transfer, but you would find that out by talking to the IO on the phone. some cases are indeed being processed at nbc, but it is rare. infopass might be a waste of time if your file really is at nbc.. I would call again, make sure you get an officer on the phone and have them look into it for confirmation

uhm, to learn the exact location of the casefile,

call into USCIS again, and ask for an ISO, a Tier 2 Human.

ISO - http://www.dhs.gov/files/publications/gc_1305658440339.shtm

Once you get an ISO, ask the ISO :

in this order

1. what date was the casefile transferred to the local office?

2. which local office ?

3. can tell me if the casefile is with an adjudicator or still in queue, waiting on the adjudicator ?

the order is important.

Good Luck ! and report back here when you've learned more about this local office stuff.

Aye, follow Darnell's advice. To talk to a tier 2, call the USCIS number and say nothing until someone starts talking to you in Spanish. Say "English please" then request from the next person transfer you to an ISO.

Thanks for advice guys. I will try to contact an ISO with the steps that Darnell mentioned and update what I find our.

In one of my previous calls to the uscis rep, I requested the rep to transfer me to a tier 2 rep but he refused to do so. So I ended eventually hanging up because he would just keep refusing to transfer me claiming that he had satisfied my reason for calling which was to find out where my case was. Anyway hopefully this time I will be more successful.

Thanks again.

Ok, so I was finally able to talk to an ISO today who told me that my case file was transferred from the NBC to the Detroit field office on Jan 4, 2013. She couldn't tell me if the case file was with an adjudicator or still in queue, waiting on the adjudicator. She also couldn't give me processing time line for my field office. I can't see processing times for the I130 for the Detroit field office online either.

In this case, is it worth it to schedule an Infopass appointment (in other words, would they be able to give me any useful information about my case or just let me know that they have my case and can't give any time information)? Also, any suggestions on what sort of questions should I ask at the Infopass appt so I can get meaningful answers from them?

Thanks to all for your help.
