Hello fellow VJers! :-)

I am wondering if my fiancé can include me in his health insurance while I am still in a K1 visa status. Our wedding is scheduled to be on March 23. Can we do the process as early as now or should we wait until we get married? What are the requirements in case we apply? I don't have a SSN yet though. We intend to apply one for me within this week or perhaps next week. Thank you for the help. :-)

I do not believe you need to be married or have a SSN. I added my wife as soon as she got here and before we got married. In Calif at least they will insure your "partner" regardless of marital status. Also, in Calif they do not require your SSN for health insurance.

health care administrator for your husband has set of policy and rules. In general, most plan would not allow him to add you to his policy since you are not a spouse.

My policy has allows me to add change in status like getting married and adding spouse to the plan.

I was able to add my wife to the plan after marriage and SSN was not required. Once SSN was received, I called back to update her profile.

You could get married in court and get marriage certificate, then have the wedding later on.

Thank you very much for the enlightenment. :-) We will try to find out if we can do it while I am on the fiancé visa. Else, I can wait after our church wedding on March 23rd. :-) Perhaps we would consider getting me an SSN first then just have it changed to my married name as soon as we get our marriage license.

Married for Medical, Dental and Vision benefits and/or with SSN (if you'll be the beneficiary for Life or Spousal Insurance). You need to show proof of marriage and in my case, my new DL and SSN to reflect my name change.

Good luck!

Well maybe they'll use it for another purpose but they've asked me to show my SSN card and faxed them our marriage certificate. Again, these were asked from me and may not apply to the OP

when I first married my wife, I was able to add her to my health coverage without a SSN. (I have a Cadillac plan).

Also, some plans allow a "domestic partner" to be added to your coverage. Domestic partner defined as same sex or opposite sex living together.

To add, at the time I added my wife, she did not have a greencard nor was she a LPR. But she was just physically in the US on a visa overstay.

This blanket statement about having to be married first is incorrect. As another poster said earlier (and in my case as well), fiance(e)s were able to be added to the health insurance plan - it is possible. Your fiance just needs to check w/his insurance company and mention that you will be here on a fiance(e) visa. That's what we did and the insurance coverage started the day (my now husband) entered the U.S.

I have Medica, legal thieves I call them, their requirement is to add wife and child on 45 days after life changing event such as marriage(that is my situation) but she is not a USC yet and still in the Philippines where my insurance doesn't cover her or child, yet I only had 45 days after our wedding date, the price went up three fold, 7 grand a year out of my pocket through my employer we are in the process of filing I-130 for both and of course have no idea how long it will take for them to be here. Just the way these insurance crooks work.

Good Luck make sure he investigates the cost!!!!!!
