They would probably do it by region. I haven't seen the planned military response to the Yellowstone Caldera Response Plan, but that would be a national scenario. I just know how they plan to deal with between 7 and 11 million people suddenly left without any viable infrastructure, 1 million dead and injured, no water, and enough food left to last 2 to 3 days optimistically.

Having an armed population is one of the factors the authorities have to consider in dealing with any national disaster. In the past when civilian authorities are overwhelmed, they retreat, wait for the national guard or other military assets to muster, then when things calm down naturally, move in to reestablish order. So, as long as everybody is looting and shooting zombies, the military types are going to establish a perimeter, contain the situation, and let nature run its course. When everybody runs out of food, bullets, and attitude, the trucks will roll in with MRE's, blankets, and body bags.

For example, imagine Rodney King style riots covering the entire Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. Remember the footage of the LAPD in full retreat?

I agree. I think enough people feel so strongly about this issue, a lot of officials will die in the process also
