Can anyone be a co-sponsor or must it be family? If its a friend who will co-sponsor, will I need to supply any special documents, besides the list of what is needed for income verification for the co-sponsor? Im sure I can find this info with the directions for my co sponsor, but lately Im working most everyday and can only access certain pages from work... so VJ has been a great help to answer my questions. Thank you!

It can be any US citizen or legal permanent resident. Besides their I-864 and supporting financial documents, they will need to provide proof of being a USC or LPR. Documents that can be used as proof are listed in the I-864 instructions.

Your cosponsor is not required to be a family member, just a U.S. citizen or LPR. The document requirements are standard for cosponsors, whether family or friends. Good luck!

Met June 2009, Carlos returned to Guatemala in March 2010, engaged May 2011, hardship waiver, denial, three years of separation, second waiver, APPROVED!, finally back in the U.S. in May 2013, married June 2013, permanent resident January 2014, and at long last, a citizenship on October 17, 2019.  Our immigration journey has finally come to an end!

I wanted to ask you guys a question about co-sponsorship since you guys are posted this regarding co-sponsorship. Do everyone need a co-sponsor or is it only if one doesn't meet the financial/income requirement? If my income meets it, we don't need a co-sponsorship right? I just want to be clear because I want to be proactive and look for one if we have to get one for the next phase with the NVC. We are still waiting for our NOA2.

Congrats on getting your NOA1. Best of luck!

You only need a joint sponsor for the I-864 if the petitioner/sponsor does not meet the 125% income requirement.
