Hi,

My wife got her drivers license card. I have a question for the expiration date. The DMV officer used her conditional green card expiration date for her drivers license card. So when the conditional green card expires, what can we do with her drivers license?

Thanks.

90 days prior to that you would send the ROC (assuming you will do that) once you send the ROC you will get a 1 yr extension letter.

You can take the extension letter to DMV and they will extend the lic for 1 more year until the expiry date on the extension letter, once she gets her 10 yr GC she will have to go back to DMV and they would then issue her another DL with 6 yr exp from that date.

Yes everytime you will also be required to pay the fees... it sucks but unfortunately thats how the system is as of now.

Thanks. That is some money we got to pay. No good.

I don't know how it is in your state, but in both PA and NJ we only payed a pro-rated rate for my wife's DL. So, let's say if I had to pay $25 for mine (5 year), my wife was only charged $5 for hers both times (PA and NJ) 1 year each.

Texas is not that way, we have to pay $25 each time they issue a DL.

Well... sorry to hear it. It's a$$ backwards (in my mind), but it's also Texas...

Due to 9/11 everything under the uniform DL act expires when the immigration stuff expires. Keep renewing and keep paying.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

In Maryland my wife received a 5 year drivers licenses and her conditional greencard expired in September. So every state does not tie expiration dates of DL to GC.

That's how the original statute was designed, info only. Good for you guys in Maryland., just don't come west.

I had a similar experience in MD. After I received my 2 years GC, they gave me a 5 years DL. However, several months later I moved to NJ, so I needed to change my license. As a result, DMV issued me a NJ license expiring 3 months after the conditional GC expiration date. 1 year later, I went back to extend it with the I-751 extension letter. Needless to say, they extended my license for only 1 year. I don't recall how much I had to pay both times, but I am quite sure it was not $5. :) Anyway, it looks like 6 months later I am up for another extension. :) but I know that this time the game is over, I will receive a long term DL. So what's the lesson here? Until you get at least a 10 years GC, you gotta do what you gotta do: go back to DMV every time your DL expires, pay whatever fees they ask for and be patient. There is no alternative here.

My wife has her DL now that expires 3 months after GC expires. Soon we'll go with the extension letter and see how that plays out...
