Disney buys Lucasfilm for $4 billion

4:41PM EDT October 30. 2012 - Mickey Mouse can now feel the Force.

Disney (DIS) is buying Lucasfilm for $4 billion, adding the legendary Star Wars franchise to the entertainment giant's stable of characters. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Founder George Lucas.

The buyout ranks among one of the largest ever made by Disney. It's fourth behind the $19.7 billion, $7.6 billion and $5.2 billion buyouts of Capital Cities/ABC in 1995, Pixar in 2006 and Fox Family in 2001, respectively, says S&P Capital IQ. It tops the $3.96 billion Disney paid for Marvel in August 2009.

Based on Disney's closing price on Oct. 26, the deal is valued at roughly $4.1 billion. Disney will pay half the deal value in cash and issue 40 million shares of Disney to pay for the deal.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm, in a statement. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers."

Kathleen Kennedy, co-chairman of LucasFilm, will report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn.

Apparently Disney also wants to create a Star Wars movie by 2015 (see here for source). Ok....I guess we can expect low quality family entertainment for ages to come!! :)

They've done well with the recent Marvel adaptations. There's no reason why they couldn't do the same with the Star Wars franchise. The real issue is whether or not the new films will be animated.

I'm just praying that the Star Wars films from Disney are definitely more 'Avengers' than 'John Carter'.

In the full press release they've confirmed it will be live-action and that the deal also includes the Indiana Jones franchise too. I really do think that Disney will bring life to a flagging franchise. It does really well in terms of the Expanded Universe in comics and books, but it is time for a fresh take on the universe and a return to theaters for an original film at last, only been waiting since 2005!

I am happy to see them doing some more star wars movies.. I was never a big star wars guy but found them enjoyable - Do they do prequels, sequels, or during-quels?

It's listed on the Disney website as Star Wars VII so I'm not sure whether that means it will follow on after ROTJ (Timothy Zahn's Trilogy would be a great place to start!), or if it will fall somewhere else in the universe?

George Lucas a sell out is he broke? on drugs lol.

He won't live forever... Probably just wants to retire and hand off the legacy to someone he trusts.

That new Yacht that Steve jobs built could be made to look like a star destroyer without too much work..He could use the 4 billion for that. How nice would it be to get 4 billion and it really doesn't even change your lifestyle.

Disney did a great job on John Carter Movie. IMO, that's the same genre as the Star Wars Thingies...

Now, with all of the loyal fan base on Star Wars, do you really think Disney is gonna mess up 'the next movie' ?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
