I was lucky to have applied for the SSN 2 weeks before the I-94 expired but unfortunately cannot get a drivers license and our bank will not let me open an account until I get State ID which I cannot get now until the EAD is approved. The waiting game continues, so if you haven't got your SSN its a long wait. Good luck.

I think that you can get a bank account with your passport, no need of SSC... It probably depends on the bank though... Correct me if I'm wrong... But it doesn't hurt to call your husband's bank and ask :)

Unfortunately my husband's bank will only accept US Government Issued ID eg, US Passport, Drivers License, Greencard or State ID Card. Just one of those things.

What's his bank? Some banks were asking for state I.d some are not.. my husband and I got a joint account without state I'd. If you want you guys can open a new account at chase bank.. I have heard they were not asking for state I.d, just your passport and marriage cert.

Goodluck!!

Peach, for clarification purposes, your visa expired the moment you set foot on US soil. Do not worry about the expiration date on it, because it's completely irrelevant to this process.

Also, don't even bother going to the SS office, because until you get your EAD or Green Card, you will not be able to prove lawful presence (because your I-94 has expired).

Follow the AOS guide, get all the papers together, and worry about getting joint bank accounts later. As Harpa said, there's a big chance you won't have an interview and, in the event you do get it, it'll be a few months down the road; so you will have plenty time to get your SS# and to be added to the bank.accounts, etc.
