So what happens if Im not approved for the K1 visa by our wedding date (May 4th, 07) My American fiance is sponsoring me (Canadian) Our package was recieved on October 3rd, 06. Should we start making other arrangements for the wedding? It is to take place in NJ where she lives. Thanks. (The Vermont office is processing cases from 7 months ago right now.. and our wedding is just over 6 months away)

One should never plan weddings etc until they have visa in hand. There are too many things that can hold up this process and nothing is ever guaranteed.

Correct always make the plans flexible. In our case we plan on a simple civil ceremony in front of a judge, then plan a nice wedding ceremony for later, that way we have more than the 90 days of the K-1 to plan a proper wedding.

Mine took just about 5 months & I was a short one!

I agree with Aussie on resisting making plans, however, the published case times on the USCIS website are not reality. Take a look at real timelines of other members. VSC is starting to turn cases in 30-45 days (but never any guaranties) now that the IMBRA debacle is mostly behind us. Some cases seem to have chronuc delays for unknown reasons. Then once you are past the USCIS you have to wait for the NVC. While NVC is usually quick about you never no what obstacle may be thrown at you (name "hit" for example). Then it moves to the consulate. Some consulates are fast (a few weeks) while others are much slower (a few to several months) for the interview. All I can say is to hope for the best.....and be flexible.....

You can choose a date, but you shouldn't put deposits on anything until you at least have a date for the interview. Even then there is always the possibility of a problem that could cause a delay.

We waited until we got the approval at the interview to order invitations, hire a caterer, etc. You can plan a nice wedding in a couple months.

Just to add to this, we got through VSC quickly, but Montreal is projecting at least a 4 month wait for an interview. If you are with Vancouver though, the wait is lightening speed. Check out the Canada forum for this sort of info.

It's also better for your sanity if you don't have a date. My fiancee and I had a date in mind, canceled it, had another date, canceled it. It's really discouraging to go through that. We're waiting on Montreal and if you call them, you'll get different responses, depending on who you get. We were told something different each time we called. The only thing we've been booking and changing has been my church. Then again our reception will be there too, so it hasn't been as much of a hassle as it could be. Short version: wait until you have the interview.

I would not plan a wedding now! If you are going through Montreal, the wait is long. My case was approved but my fiance is waiting to interview with Montreal. They are going very slow right now! Vermont was speedy but Montreal is slow!

Just checked my case and it was approved yesterday Only 20 days after they recieved it. Hopefully everything else goes as quickly. Thanks for everyones suggestions and help, its appreciated.

There is little choice but to gamble, or realize you should not plan a large wedding ceremony prior to filing for K-1. Good luck!
