I wanted to ask if anybody knows? When my husband arrives in the U.S. (from Nigeria) can he travel to London without a visa, using his 2 yr. green card. I know i don't need a visa cos i am an American citizen and we dont need visas to travel to London. Will he have that same advantage with 2 year green card. .

If I am not mistaken, he will have to meet visa requirements to London based on his Nigerian Citizenship.

The GC allows him to enter freely back into the US.

Someone please confirm or deny this statement.

Yes you are right..... good.gif

His residency is irrelevant, it's your nationality which determines whether you need a visa or not. The green card applies only to America, so since he's from Nigeria and Nigerians do need a visa to travel to London, he will need one to travel from US

He will need a visa because he is a Nigerian citizen on a Nigerian passport.

I spent 6 hours in Heathrow due to this oversight.

Gowon recommends to all to AOS at each earliest opportunity.

There used to be a time that Nigerian as part of the British commonwealth did not need a visa.

Sigh - God dey.

I'm really glad you asked before buying the ticket and showing up at the airport. Nigerians need visas to go just about everywhere, sorry! There are many "restricted nationalities" that have just got to check visa requirements each and every time they travel. This is based on my work as a travel agent and also working at the denied boarding desk at Atlanta airport where the poor souls come when after not being allowed to check-in. The UK, Europe, Canada, USA, Australia, are you kidding me? However, anyone can go to Mexico if they have a valid USA visa /green card!

Are you asking about a transit visa when he comes or visiting the UK after he is here? I am confused.

International travel is always based on the government issued valid ID used for travel--i.e. passport. He will be traveling on his Nigerian passport and will need to follow all the requirements of a Nigerian citizen for internal travel when it comes to tourist visas or transit visas. Please check with each country of intended visit or transit to see what their requirements are. The onoy help the GC can be is to show ties to the US which may make getting a tourist visa easier than someone from Nigeria who lives in Nigeria. There are a few places in the Western Hemisphere that will allow travel on a US GC and the home passport without the need for a tourist visa. It does not matter whether it is a two year GC or a 10 year GC, it is the same document with an expiration date and has the same rules and regulations as the 10 year GC except you must file ROC before the 2 years as a LPR are up. The GC is only for getting him back into the US without the requirement for a visa or re-entry permit and it MAY make getting tourist visas easier--that is it. My wife requires a visa to travel to most countries in the world--the list of countries she can travel without a visa is very small, but they are those countries that I typically need a visa for. SIGH!

Always check the visa requirements for the USC and the spouse based on the spouse's passport before booking travel to avoid any problems.

Good luck,

Dave

He can indeed go to London, he just needs to apply for a visa. He should be able to get this visa readily since he has ties to USA. I mean why would a Nigerian abandon a for sure residency in the USA for old Blighty?
