When it comes to protecting my life I want all available options which includes having a firearm on my person. Last thing I want is to be laying in a pool of my own blood thinking to myself; "if I had only been armed".

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Your best self defense weapon is between your ears. The second best is a good pair of running shoes.

So you wear a bullet proof vest when you are out in public and carry a taser?

And with my gun I have an equal if not better chance to defend myself and prohibit their success of killing me. Of is that a violation of their rights in the liberal view?

No, I share that sentiment with you. The question is not whether the choice for the individual relative only to the question of his self-defense justifies the gun but whether the larger questions re whether you are more or less safe when so many guns exist in this country and are so easily obtained by individuals like this shooter.

has nothing to do with what i'm after - just giving an example to challenge your statement.

If that is your objective let me help you out. You could offer up the kind of attacks attempted in the japanese subway system using poison gas. You could suggest using box-cutters to kill an airline crew and then fly the aircraft into a sky-scraper. If you think of it you can come up with all sorts of nifty ways a wannabe mass-murderer could accomplish his objective. But why do you want to do that?

This is something actually I have been seeing on other forums - the fact that his explosives knowledge may have been great enough that had he zero access to firearms, he may have conducted more lethal bomb attacks.

You don't need nukes to take down the government. Assault rifles will do just fine.

The most powerful military in the world couldn't handle a ragtag team of Iraqi insurgents armed with AK-47's until they essentially bribed them (aka "the surge").

Then how is it that those Shiites with all the weapons that they had available were unable to take down Saddam without our Air Force and tanks to help? Or why we had to use our air power to turn the tide against Khadafi? There are many examples to choose from. AK-47's alone will not take down the US Government!

Really I kind of think the same about the whole AR-15 point. While I personally can't understand why AR-15s are even available to the public, I do understand why hand guns are, and I would think if he had the right shoulder harness with just 4 fully loaded hand guns, he could have easily killed 12 people sitting in a crowded movie theatre. Doesn't really matter when you get right to it. A determined pschopath can kill people if he really wants to.
