Congrats!

My husband was very worried about the process and wanted to hire a lawyer too. I disagreed with him though because I wasted money on them when I filed a student visa. We did it all by ourselves and now I don't even know in what part of the process we needed an attorney.

Hi abner137,

Thanks for your reply and good wishes.

Hi sms78,

Thanks for insight into your experience.

Yes, it all feels overwhelming at first, but once you learn the process you'll never need to turn to an attorney again... unless you run into a fire breathing beurocrat of course. :help::crying:

Take care,

Sorry you had a bad experience! My experience was quite the reverse. I know a lot of people don't advocate using attornies but I found mine invaluable. All my questions were answered through the K1 and AOS process and all the documents checked and doubled checked, so I was relieved and very satisfied. Money well spent.

Hi Redflame2012,

Good to know that 100% of the Immigration Attorneys don't rip off 100% of the people who come to them for help.

Glad you were able to find one of the 1%.

Take care,

This is a DIY process but if you dont have the time to look every thing up and you are nervious. You would like a little help with out the BIG price tag of a lawyer. I can recomend YFW visa yourfilipinawife.com. It is a husband / wife team. They do all countries but specialize in Philippines. Tell them Brian and Erenea sent you.

thank you for your help, at first me and my husband noticed that our lawyer dont use to reply our emails..and we are already both upset and keep messaging her.. and i even noticed that she dont use to message me or even explain things about the visa process.. as a wife and a beneficiary, i believed that i have my right to know everything as well and thanks to VJ people, they really help me a lot by letting me understand the visa process and since i learned, i message back the lawyer and asked few things like what visa did she apply for us, is it CR1 or IR1 and when did we recieved the NOA1, when did she apply and i even asked about how am i going to obtain the COC in singapore, maybe she was surprise how did i learn all of this things, and after that she is now use to reply my email and update our status :) and hopefully she wont take long to process everything as soon as she received any updates, anyway me and my husband can received updates from USCIS in our email so she cant foolo us hopefully :)

Something to keep in mind. Lawyers do not normal like to work for a fixed price or a set fee. They work based on billable hours. That means every minuet they spend on your case they send you a bill based on an hourly rate. Even if they have a lesser associate in their office do part of the work it may be a lower rate but still billed at an hourly rate.

My ex-wifes attorney would bill her about $30 every time I sent him an email about the divorce. So don't be surprised if your attorney does not always keep you informed. Unless he thinks he can bill you for it he probably won't do it.

If you do need another immigration lawyer, check out Lawrence R. Holmes. I hired him, and his team is Excellent! Every time I have needed to talk, they listen and talk with you. And the Paralegal Specialist, Yvonne, who is handling our case is one of the most sweetest persons to work with. I have to admitt, I have probably had some strange questions, but she always takes the time to talk with me and answer any questions we have. And if she can't talk by phone, she has never failed to reply by email. She has become more our friend than just a Paralegal Specialist to us. Also, Mr. Holmes himself did this very process, by himself, and afterwards wanted to help others in his shoes. They are very nice! His website is www.kvisas.com. If you feel up to hiring someone else, give them a look. I believe I read on a thread here that someone else here on vj has used him as well. Good Luck! And don't give up! God Bless!!

Hi Mateo&Raquel,

Thanks for your message and for the recommendation.

If we happen to get a fire breathing beurocrat during the interview, we'll be sure to keep him in mind.

Hi dwheels76,

Thanks for your best wishes.

Yes, I think maybe the fire breathing dragon lady and one of the fire breathing beurocrats would make a good couple.

They would never have to invest in a barbecue and their fights would have the neighbors calling the fire department every time.

Take care,

Hi everyone,

Thank god for this threat because I need to get something off my chest about my laywer too.

My fiance and I hired a lawyer (recommended) in December last year, paid the fee for the petition and his own fee and provided all the necessary paperwork for him to file for my K1. He promised he will file asap.

He ended up filing two months later, February 17th, after I inquired about the status of my petition!! That was a first red flag! Ok I got very upset but my fiance managed to calm me down.

Communication with him was never easy, he never answers his phone and calls back only hours, days later. Same thing with emails. I understand he's busy though.

When I inquired again about my status 2.5 months into the process, he said I should expect an answer from the USCIS within 4-6 weeks. 6 weeks passed and nothing happened. When I asked him about this and told him that he's stressing me out he said I need to calm down, wait and stop being mean or he will resign. I stopped talking to him after that.

Today we receieved RFE, 5 months and 1 day after he filed for us. Yet again, I am frustrated beyond belief. In my opinion, the lawyer didn't file the correct paperwork or not enough paperwork.

What is the point of hiring a lawyer when he's doing nothing but delaying the process. Mind you that at this point I haven't seen my fiance for over 7 months and this lawyer is a huge burdon on both our shoulders.

So we decided to fire him and continue with the process ourselves. I find the people here on VJ to be far more helpful.

Note to all.

Even if you use a "professional" to do your paperwork. Insist that you get copies of everything filed.

If something gets messed up it is not the lawyer who gets baned,, it is you.
