Hello everyone! My fiancé and I just received our NOA2 for the fiancé visa and we are very excited! Now we are looking forward to his interview, of course. From what I’ve read, it seems like the interviews in Madrid go pretty smoothly, but we do have a couple of questions regarding our financial situation which is as follows:

I (American citizen) have a steady job as a teacher in Ohio making $42,000/year, but I only have $1,000 in savings. I do not own a home (I rent), but I do own a car. No kids. $30,000 life insurance.

My fiancé (Spanish citizen) is unemployed (there are no jobs in Spain!) and doesn’t have much savings either. He does have a degree in Economics and plans on finding a job as soon as possible in the U.S., of course. All of his previous jobs have been temporary work, nothing with a contract and nothing related to his degree.

So my question is…will our financial situation be something that they are concerned about and/or a reason to deny his visa? If so, is there anything we can do to remedy this besides filling out the I-134? Co-sponser?

Thanks!

Laura

As long as your income is above the poverty level for your new household size, you are good to go. How much you have in savings does not enter into the equation.

Also, the financial status of your beneficiary doesn't matter either. Most of the fiancés that come here are unemployed at the time they come here.

Your savings can be used in the situation where you don't meet the poverty guidelines for income, but you're well above that, so lack of savings won't hurt you.

For a household of 2, you and your fiance, you only need to have $18,912. Poverty guidelines: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-864p.pdf

You have more than enough income. Your fiance's income and work history do not matter.

Since you have more than enough in income, there is no need to even fill out the assets portion of the I-134. Just leave that part blank.
