IF someone is coming to the U.S for the first time on an immigrant based visa, can their POE be in London? The flight we are looking at is from Karachi to London and than to Raleigh, NC. I don't think you can have a POE in Raleigh? Can the POE be done in London?

Poe is point of entry (as in... point of entry into the u.s.) london does not do us customs/poe/boarder patrol... the poe would be in raleigh. I think the only plaace that i know of that clears u.s. customs outside us territory is ireland (shannon and dublin airports do a pre clearance) that may be wrong.. others MIGHT do it too but im 100% that london does not. Any international airpot to the u.s. does their own poe though so im not sure who said tha raleigh doesnt but any airport with a flight from london would have a customs/poe/border patrol clearance to get into the u.s.

Not just Shannon and Dublin. Someone recently had a Bahamas POE. My POE will be Toronto. There are other ports too.

Oh, and POE is port of entry. London, as far as I know, wouldn't be a POE though.

No

The POE will be the first airport that you arrive at in the US. If Raleigh is the first airport you arrive at in the US, POE procedures will be conducted there.

This isn't correct. Certain international airports outside of the U.S. pre-screen you before the flight, so the POE would be in that facility (some airports in Canada, Bahamas, and Ireland). But not London as far as I know.

I am well aware of CBP preclearance facilities in Canada, the Bahamas, and Ireland. My response to the OP was specific to the question about London (which does not have a CBP preclearance facility) so I stand by my response.

Right Port, sorry, it was late when I was writing.. and I did say that some other places besides Shannon and Dublin might do it but I wasn't sure.

However, I know for sure that London DOES NOT do pre-clearance as my husband lives near London and travels through varies London airports to the U.S. to visit often, and he never goes through customs until landing in the U.S. -- he doesn't have the option to go through early screening.

RDU is an international airport so why do you think POE can't be there?

RDU "can be" the POE but will not be unless it is the first place the plane lands in the USA. POE is first place the plane lands in USA, unless pre-screened outside the USA. London is not a POE.

Why are you correcting me--OP indicated that the plane is going from London to Raleigh, so RDU will be the first place the plane lands in the U.S. I was simply asking why OP had stated that RDU could not be a POE.

Not really correcting you, just adding an important concept to the discussion. I don't always assume people know what they are talking about, so did not assume RDU was definitely the first US airport, though it certainly CAN be and WILL be if it's a non-stop flight from London.

They also fly non-stop. "Direct" means same plane but may or may not be non-stop. Changing planes is a "connection". Either way, the OP was not absolutely clear the flight was non-stop London to RDU.

You're right. I think it was clear that the OP was referring to a non-stop flight, but I suppose it's possible that he wasn't. In any case, everyone gets the gist and no need to split any more hairs.

The American route is non-stop, which is somewhat surprising I guess. They will also send you via JFK and LGA. It would be terrible to have to POE in JFK only to have get in a car or bus to catch a flight at LGA, so I hope that's not what OP is doing.

Correcting the corrections.

Dublin doesn't do pre-clearance. It's full stop customs and immigration.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.
