And free torture. I've not been to prison but to a handful of holding cells and county jail (very short stays 10 days or less). It is the most miserable place I've been to in my life.

To get in an idea....go into a small bathroom with no tv, no windows, and put a kids desk there and a rubbery/plastic mattress with an uncomfortable pillow.

Lock yourself in and three times a day you will get slop served on a wet tray (once at 5am, once at 11am, and once at 4pm which is the last meal of the day). You will be starving non-stop and all you look forward to is that next meal of slop.

You can pace back and forth, do pushups....fill your pillow case with water to use as a weight....and twiddle your thumbs...

It is pure torture! When they release you from your cage for a few hours a day you can go out into the dayroom to have conversations with a mix of crazy criminals.

Then back to your cage where you share a toilet with some disgusting crazy maniac.

Then again, this is county jail which is a lot worse than prison....Everyone in the county headed to prison is so excited and literally can't wait to get transferred for the drastically improved living conditions....Better food, more commissary options, more freedom, etc...

Can you have books?

Just thought I'd point out by referring to migrant workers, I'm not necessarily referring to immigrants from outside the US. Seasons for produce are short. To work in the field as a laborer you must be migrant, i.e. nomadic for long term employment. Often, laborers will harvest one crop for a few weeks and then move to an entirely different state for the next harvest.

Therefore, you could offer very high wages and still not attract enough labor because not enough people are willing to be nomadic. I think you could argue that wages would need to be as high as 40 or even 50 dollars an hour before your average American is tempted to give up a settled lifestyle for a nomadic one.

The ones you speak of NEED to be nomadic because they are NOT LEGAL and cannot collect unemployment as opposed to LEGAL workers that could to tide them over between seasonal jobs. Again you are comaring what someone MUST do because they are SLAVES and have no choice but to be exploited for corporate profit, as opposed to legal wrokers PROTECTED by the laws we have passed. You are comparing slaves stripped of all protection for profit to legal American workers who have unemployment, workers comp, disability, medicare, SS...WHY would you make that comparison?

Stop making irrelevent comparisons.

Exactly. That's why for the longest time, we've had exemptions for allowing migrant labor to come from outside of this country. But now, with all these new draconian, state-level laws against immigration, the environment is too hostile for these temporary workers.

This has always been an economic issue.

There is a vast difference between a migrant worker in this country legally and an illegal immigrant.

None of the state level laws to counter illegal aliens have any bearing or effect on legalize ant workers. But they aren't who these farmers have been hiring, are they?

As we have seen many times, this issue exposes liberals as the racists they are. They WANT an exploited, abused underclass so their corporate donors will be able to avoid the laws they pass to protect white people. They tell us we MUST have these exploited workers, that business cannot survive without a way to avoid the cost of the worker protections they demanded in the first place

The problem of illegal immigration can be solved very easily

1. Implement E-verufy and make it accessible to any employer

2. Require e-verify for all employment

3. Limit documents allowed to US birth certificate, US Passport, US green Card, US EAD or US work visa. Nothing else. No more "column B & C" BS to open the door for fake documents. No need for SS card for employment, too easily faked. Just give the SSN and it must be verified by e-verify

4. $100,000 per day TAX for each illegal employed

5. Sieze property and padlock businesses to collect the tax

6. Auction the siezed property and give the money to USCIS to modernize the immigration system to reduce wait times for LEGAL immigrants, migrant workers

90% of illegals will self deport in 30 days or less. (as has been proven in Alabama) The rest will wander back home to freedom in the next few months. 11 million jobs will be opened and the employers will find the level of pay required to entice legal workers to take that work. They will when the pay is right. You will pay more for lettuce, tomatoes and roof shingling, but you will pay less for school taxes, medical expenses, uninsured motorist insurance, etc.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Why should there be any labor shortage for farmers if the rate is 7-8 percent . Let the unemployed pick tomatos and when the crop is picked go back on unemployment. Let them work for 6-8 weeks.

Finally we will have ended slavery...and the Dems, as they did before, will fight it all the way.

Not this Dem, I am in full and complete agreement with you on this. I suspect most other 'Dems' are as well!

The level of wage necessary is not really the issue. Like in most other areas of the economy, use a level playing field and let the laws of supply and demand determine how high a wage must be to get enough workers!

Sure if you can post without irrelevent comparisons. Why would you compare illegals that have NOTHING with legal workers that have unemployment for the off season? That's a question, not an accusation. Do you think you are talking to someone that doesn't know this business, hasn't been in a seasonal business for nearly 40 years? The only "nomadic" construction workers are the ones jumping on their Harleys and soaking up sun (and direct deposit unemployment checks), plus EBT cards and medicaid in Florida for the winter and wander back about late April to go back to work.

The nomadic workers are illegals that have no choice because they are being exploited and have none of the protections legal workers have.

Sorry but I have no tolerance or civility for the abuse of humans and exploitation of people because they are brown.

Really? Then I would like to see the Democrats/Liberals LEAD in this matter and demand the end of this abuse. Why are they not doing that James? It seems every move they make is only to continue to insure the presence of an exploited underclass in this country. It is revolting.
