I dont know about your country but my husband is in Jamaica and we talk/txt everyday. He has no computer access so the phone is our only source of communication. Rebtel is pretty good i use it on my mobile phone. Its pretty cheap too. Try to see if your spouse is able to a magic jack and be able to call u from the US for free using a computer.

I use Rebtel its great; but as far as comparing it with other phone companies I have not done that yet and maybe I should....but Rebtel works for me great that's why I haven't tried another one. Me and my baby talk so much its crazy that our only means of communication along with texting and emailing each other.....He is in Nigeria also.....

I use rebtel. I talk to my best friend everyday at least once, but usually 2 or 3 (should I also include the times when I get ticked off, hang up, and call right back repeatedly?) Sometimes the calls are less than a minute due to him being at work, but those seconds make all the difference in the world.

I used to call every day , just using my mobile carrier to make sure I had the documentation. For longer calls I used pingo from my home phone.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

For those with loved ones in Nigeria and specifically those with no PC access, how often do you folsk talk on the telephone? Also, is RebTel still the lowest cost?

Ese pupo.

I use Rebtel and it is great. Also, it allows you to print out the monthly statements for later use. Even though we chat daily on BB, we still talk everyday and several times a day. It is very reasonable and good connection.

We talk every other day through Rebtel at 38 cents a minute. The electricity is very spotty in the city my fiance lives in. We chat on yahoo when we can.

This is an eye opening experience.

RebTel is 8.4c/min

Pingo is 7.5c/min

LocalPhone is 6.5c/min

Amantel is 4.7/min

Going to try Amantel.

Thanks.

Does Amantel store records of phone calls, though? If not, I'll stick with RebTel: very easy to get and print history. It's 9.9c to Uganda, and Amantel is ~6-7c depending on how much credit you buy, but we really need the call history option.

That's a really good point...the call history option. Many of us don't even think about that especially before beginning this process.

An astute point and why I decided to stick with RebTel.

Another thing I noticed is by the time you calculate the roundings and surcharges with Amantel it is not that much of a savings over RebTel.

The roundings/surcharges didn't look too bad, although I only looked at the details for the $50 card:

Product Details Connection Fee: No Fee

Call to International Cell Phones:Higher rates may apply

Sale Price:50.0

Maintenance Fee:No Fee

Expiration Date:6 months from the date of 1st use

Details: Calls are billed in 1-2 minute increments; partial minutes are billed as whole minutes. No connection fee or taxes. Minutes are advertised with local access number. *Toll free number charges extra 2.0c per min. Advertised mins are based on one single call as rounding and surcharges will reduce the actual delivered mins than advertised on website.

It would probably work well for keeping in touch with people back in Uganda once Aaron gets here: I'll keep it in mind for once we no longer have to be concerned about the call records.
