No, with a qualification. Europe lost any relevance to the modern world when European nations lost nearly all their colonies post WWII. Look how silly Britain looked bullying the Argentinians, or how few Europeans countries actually contribute anything meaningful to the trouble spots in the world.

It is the beginning of the end for the US, and Japan, however. By the end of this century, China and India will be the dominant powers in the world, that is if they don't nuke each other first. And of course, there is the wild card of the Muslim nations, if they ever get their act together and unite behind some leader that could bring them back to their former glory.

You think relevance is only given by colonies? By your own logic, the US should have none, since it has no territories.

The Western European economic system was based on Mercantilism, sustained by trade with it's overseas colonies and protectorates. Europe was already in decline by the end of the nineteenth century, then fought two major world wars, and lost territorial control of the Middle East and North Africa. Tell me how that applies to the United States.
