Only if you want to invite the employees of the SSA and the DMV to attend your Oath Ceremony. I can't think of any reason why they would want to see you taking the Oath though. It would be a fair punishment though, as attending the Oath as a guest is pure torture. So you should invite those guys!

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915

New US citizen - After the Oath ceremony

Of course, if you SS card is old enough that my immigration status is *not* on it, you can tell them not to generate a replacement card. I showed my passport card as proof of citizenship and told him not to generate a new card, as it was not necessary.

How old is your card? I received my card in 1981. Should I ask for the new card or current card is enough?

I guess it all depends on if your card has any restrictions printed on it or not. My card is from 2001, from when I came here on a K1 visa, so it has "Valid for work only with INS Authorization" printed on it.

Obviously, I will need a new card. If it did not have this restriction I would not.

You definitely want to go to SS AFTER you receive your certificate, they are not exactly trusting people to take you word that you are going to get one. They will want to see the original and will make a copy of it. Reason for going, SS is keeping track of immigration status now, and in some cases, the DOS is checking that database before they will issue you a passport, even though they will not issue you a passport until they also see your original certificate.

Its not exactly they will charge you 400 bucks for a new SS card, they are free, well kind of until you consider how badly we are getting screwed with FICA taxes.

DMV depends on your state, in Wisconsin don't need to show your certificate, just need to check a box stating you are a US citizen, but if you do that before you receive your certificate, the USCIS will find out and deport you to our sun.

You are not a US citizen until you receive your certificate that says so, this means another long trip, waiting in long lines, lip syncing the oath, and watching videos, but most important, turning in your green card.

That's when you learn, you have to go to SS, the DVM, voters registration, and find out your foreign passport is now worthless for leaving this country. So you have more things to do, more money to spend, and even more forms to fill out.

It's one those few things you will get for free from the government . So, let them send you a brand new little card. When i went to the SSN office to update my status, that issue was never touched. So if u want a brand new SSN card it's your time to get it. Anyway, what really matters is that you get your info update in their system. Card is just an additional thing but it's free.

Don't recall anyone, ever, asking to see my SS card, like with employment, bank accounts, drivers' license, even the USIS. Memorized the number a long time ago, and just gave them that.. Even memorized my wife's SS number and just fire that off when asked. But I gather her having that card means something to her.

She also felt naked when they took away her green card, proof that she belongs her. Just said, now you are a US citizen just like I am, I never, ever carried proof that I am a US citizen, and never was asked if I was. Bit then in her home country, she was required to carry a citizen ID card from the time she was born. She has quite a collection of those with even her baby photo on the earliest one. We never had that here, but who knows the way this country is changing.

Now we have a new law in Wisconsin with photo ID's required to vote, republicans are moaning about voter fraud, but the courts are looking into this. Voter fraud has never been a problem, but politician fraud is a major problem in this country. But there the solution is not ID's, should ship these guys to some deserted island instead.

exactly - you are most about having them update your status in their system, They will take a photocopy of your Citizneship certificate. I headed to the SSN office right after my oath and was out in 15-30 minutes. I didn't get a new SSN card.
