Passport: Certified copy or just regular copy

Hi VJ, I am just preparing for the DS-230, and I need a quick answer.

In your DS-230, do you need to include a certified copy of your foreign spouse's passport? Or will a regular/scanned copy of the passport do? The feel the NVC website does not give clear answer for this.

I just sent in a scanned copy. No problem. They will need to see the real deal at the interview.

Probably impossible to get a certified copy of a passport. Certified copies are as good as the original, so it's unlikely a peron can have a valid passport and a certified copy.

We never sent certified copies of anything and sailed through without an RFE.

It's actually quite possible to get a certified copy of a passport. I needed to get one last year for my husband's US taxes so I could get an ITIN since I was still in Canada without a SSN. I just went to the Passport Agency for Canada, gave over my passport, and within a few days, I had my passport back with a certified copy.

But for the DS-230, just a photocopy is needed.
