George H.W. Bush calls Mitt Romney ‘the best choice’ in 2012 campaign

By Holly Bailey

Senior Political Reporter | The Ticket – 21 hrs ago

Mitt Romney has picked up a major, if still unofficial, endorsement in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

Former President George H.W. Bush told the Houston Chronicle he believes Romney is the best candidate in the race—though he stopped short of officially endorsing his 2012 bid.

"I think Romney is the best choice for us," Bush told the Houston Chronicle. "I like Perry, but he doesn't seem to be going anywhere; he's not surging forward."

The ex-president, who is personally close to Romney, praised the former governor's "stability, experience, principles."

"He's mature and reasonable—not a bomb thrower," Bush said, adding that he didn't mean to besmirch anybody in the field. "I've got to be a little careful, because I like Perry; he's our governor."

Yet Bush wasn't nearly as kind about Newt Gingrich, admitting that he knows the former House speaker well and isn't a fan. "I'm not his biggest advocate," he said.

Bush's support of Romney isn't that surprising. In an interview with CNN's Larry King last year, he and his wife, Barbara, praised Romney, saying he would make a "very good president."

Romney has worked hard to woo the Bush family over the years. Four years ago, most of the Bush family, including the former president and his son Jeb, supported John McCain—though they waited to endorse until after Romney had dropped out of the race.

Earlier this month, Romney traveled to Houston, where he visited the former president and first lady.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

You're going to have to give up on Ron Paul. It doesn't look like he can handle the scrutiny of what comes with being near the top.

I never expected Ron Paul to win. Most people and especially the south are RINO's and want the status quo. I expect Romney to win and the continuing destruction of this country.

RP has a couple of good ideas but the majority of his ideas would be disastrous.

what would be disasterous? Shrinking government and giving power back to the states as originally intended with the constitution?

Good choice or bad choice, I think Romney is the only one who has a real chance to unseat Obama. Of course if he does win the Repub vote, a lot will depend on who he chooses for a running mate. If he picks a nutter like McCain did, the media will eat him up.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

No, he just works with Stormfront.....

Regarding the OP, I agree. Romney may not be the darling of conservatives, but he does have enough mass appeal to draw some independents from Obama. I'm still hoping that the republicans will see the light and nominate John Huntsman, or draft Mitch Daniels.
