Just a quick question for clarification.

I have my greencard now and I was recently offered a job.

My SSN is the same one I had when I just had my EAD so it says "valid for use only with work authorization" on it.

Do I have to go back to the SSN office to request a new card to have that removed? Or will that just always be on there since I'm a greencard holder?

Thanks for any answers I just really want to be ready for my new job!

you have to go back and change it, SS needs to have your update in the system. they will send a new card without it.

No, you don't have to change it. It says valid with work auth - which your GC is. It may save you headaches with employers to do so, but you aren't required to.

I would not worry about it and just show them your GC which is a List A document for the I-9 form. Then just repeat your SSN to them from memory. I have shown my SSC about three times in my lfe as I use my passport for completing the I-9 form. My SSC is in a nice safe place--both copies.

You absolutely don't have to do anything with it. Just recently got hired, went through I-9 and e-verify and my SS card that still has "Valid with DHS authorization only" stayed at home during this process. All you need is Green Card and Social Security Number.

You don't have to, but you can. Your Green Card is the DHS authorization though.

Understand this:

If you are being employed, you need to fill out an I-9 form. Please take the time to google it and look at the documents accepted to prove (a) who you are and (b) that you are authorized to work in the United States. These documents are in three lists: List A, List B, and List C

The Green Card is a List A document. That means it proves all there is to prove. If you show your Green Card, you never need to show your SS card. All you submit is the number, and the number never changes.

An alternative for those who do not wish to show their Green Card (it's your choice which documents you show, yours only!), you could show your driver's license to prove (a) as it's a List B document plus an "unrestricted" SS card, as that's a List C document.

In mathematical terms: A = B+C

So if you show your Green Card, you are fine. If you don't want to show your Green Card, you'll need to exchange your SS card that says "Valid for work with DHS authorization only" for one that doesn't have this restriction on it.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
