Hey guys,

Just out of curiosity have any of you ever had trouble going on a cruise to the bahamas with the expired greencard and the extrention letter? It it was a regular airport it wouldn't worry me as much, but since its a port I don't know if they are familiarized with the immigration procedures. btw my cruise is 8 days, i don't know if that matters. Thanks for the help!

You must have current U.S. passport and/or current Greencard or 1 year Extension Letter

I was denied boarding a few years ago because I did not know this. Immigration operates here.

Even though I promised not to leave the ship it was a no go.

I have a similar question about applying for a Schengen visa (euro zone visa) with an expired green card and the extension letter. I know they want you to have significant ties to USA but if your extension letter is only valid a few months past your vacation will they deny you?

They could - I have seen where they want at least 6 months left on the document (passport or extension letter)

Most likely they will limit you to below the expiration date of the document.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Well I am not a citizen so I don't have a U.S. passport, but I do have my Venezuelan passport. I also have the extension letter. I was just wondering if they might give me any trouble because I have the extension letter with expired greencard, instead of a valid greencard.

The extension letter effectively un-expires the Green Card. So it's not an expired Green Card anymore. The NoA1 is like a new year sticker for your car's license plate. You should really not worry about this; you have no reason to.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Brother-

I took a cruise to the Bahamas 2 months ago with an expired green card and the extension letter. Left aand arrived back at Miami. Here is my experience. The cruise line typically is confused with the letter. It took 2 supervisors to approve it and allow me to board the ship. This was on the cruise line's end not Immigration.

When I returned. They took me out of line--took me to the back (the dreaded secondary inspection) and began to pass my documents around. They did not seem to want to deal with it--they gave it to what looked like the most junior officer--she was probably 25 years old. I could over hear her asking "what do I do with this" and her senior officers were saying...figure it out and if I can't I am here to help. As you might imagine I was like ok--they are going to shake me down and if there is one "T" that is not crossed I and done for. She took about 30 minutes and finally she returned everything to here senior officer and they let me go. Totally time in secondary inspection was 45-50 minutes.

I would recommend you schedule an infopass appt and get the stamp in your passport. This will make it easier for you and for the officer that clears you. Its not impossible to go through with the extension letter but just be prepared for secondary inspection.
