A3 for K2 same as mother's A#?

I just went through my POE on Saturday, and my son (12 years old) was not given a separate A#, the guard there said it might make for problems when he applies to be a citizen, but they would just use my A# to process him for POE, as it wasn't their problem. I appreciated not being held up at the border, but for AOS and beyond, what kind of issues can I be looking at?

K2's don't get an A# until they apply for a green card. They do NOT use the K1's A#.

This isn't an issue at all. It's perfectly normal.

Thanks for the fast response, the border guards led me to believe it needed to be corrected at some point.

Yes not an issue and he doesn't use his mother's, that is only for her.

You'd be surprised how wrong some government agencies can be. For that reason apply for your SSN in 10 days from POE, BEFORE you get married, or you could experience a different version (the kind where they tell you that your visa "magically" changed to a K3 because you got married and are therefore not SSN eligible :S, or that you can't change your name on it to your married name until you get your GC).

Having your SSN in your maiden name (for the record) doesn't affect AOS. You don't even NEED it for AOS. Just good to get it to open bank accounts etc.

Thanks! It was a headache up until the actual POE! We had the most wonderful officer we could expect to have! The trip was crowded in a Penske truck with my son, a big dog and two cats, but we made it and everyone still loves each other! (the dog slept most of the way and the cat's stopped meowing after an hour or so...) Yes, I'm finally here!

I will be trying to do this, but because they held my visa back for so much longer than expected, we have a very small window, otherwise I will have to get it after. If they try to pull the K3 thing, then I won't let them get away with it!
