Flights to the US - rountrip or single

(Hoping this is in the correct Forum)

Hi everyone,

Would it be possible to take a round trip flight rather than a single trip flight, im just worried it may look suspiciouse on the itinerary for the POE officer?

Any advice?

If a round trip ticket is cheaper, then it is fine to purchase one. Just be sure to cancel the return portion after arrival in the US.

CBP will not find that suspicious.

There's nothing wrong with purchasing a one way ticket or round trip ticket. I don't think the CBP officer even looks at your ticket (?). You should just buy whichever is cheaper.

A lot of people doing it. Since R/T is cheaper so don't worry. As other poster mentioned make sure to cancel the return trip.

Buy a roundtrip, look for the cheapest day to return, and then cancel it when getting to US.

My return flight is sometime next year. I will either cancel it or see if I can get a refund, at least some of it.

Why? The airline got their money (and the traveller is not going to get a refund of the return portion), so all is square as-is.

There have been a couple of cases here on VJ where a K1 came with a round trip ticket and didn't cancel the return ticket. When the K1 didn't show up for the return flight the airline sold the seat to a standby passenger, but apparently didn't update their passenger manifest with DHS, who subsequently recorded that the K1 had left the US. When the K1 filed for AOS they were denied because USCIS records indicated that they had left the US without advance parole, and were no longer eligible to adjust based on the K1 petition. Many others have bought round trip tickets and had no problems.

I wouldn't put my entire faith on the competency of the airlines employees to get it right. I'd cancel the return ticket, even if it means paying a fee.

Obviously, for any non-citizen (not just K-1s) it could be pretty problematic if they're unknowingly documented as having left the country, when they didn't.

Depending on how much air miles you have accumulated while waiting for the visa to come through you could look into buying a single on those - airlines don't "punish" single tickets there
