All,

I was looking for some assistance with obtaining a SSN for my fiancee. I have been through the forums, talked with friends and spent quite some time searching but keep getting different answers. Some say before, some say after getting married. I was looking for updated clarification on if there was a better time with specific evidence. I realize I may get similar answers here, but these forums have always been helpful so I am giving it a go.

Thanks in advance for all the responces!

Your choice. You must get it while she has at least 2 weeks left on her I-94 or wait until EAD in hand. I would suggest before wedding to avoid any name change confusion/inconsistency with POE records (if she is changing her name) and then update with new name and new LPR status after getting Greencard. But, this is just an opinion. There is no clear cut, best way; the best way depends on you circumstances and priorities.

You must get one sooner than the last two weeks left on the I-94 or wait until you get your I797.

"Your I-797"?? No. You can get one with an EAD or GC.

Agree with Harpa. While its supposed to be possible to get it after marriage, some offices give you problems. Some because the married name doesn't match USCIS, some people they claim that you changed to a K3 when you got married (which is wrong) and K3's aren't SSN eligible. I got mine before marriage and changed it once I received my GC. You can also change the name when you get the EAD, I just didn't have the need :)

I applied before the wedding and I am glad I did so.

Took me 39 days and a supervisor to get it. Before that: no driver`s license or banking could be handled. Bummer.

I would recommend applying for one before the wedding and getting a name change after if need be.

US citizen since April 2016

ROC completed April 2014

AOS from K1 completed February 2012
