I had two VW Jettas, both model years before 2001.

The first one, a 5-speed 2.0 L "CE" (similar to "GL") lasted 8 years and 225,000 miles. Reasonable on acceleration and fuel economy (approx 36 mpg highway driving at 70 mph). Traded in for the second one, a 1996 automatic "GLS".

Second one didn't perform as well (automatic, plus age etc) replaced due to totalling.

I have a 2005 Jetta. The new body style. I had previously owned a 1996 Jetta, both manuals. I absolutely loved the old one and my new one is kick###. I would not have another car. When this one gets worn out I'll trade it in for another one. The gas mileage is excellent and even with gas as high as it is now it only costs about $35 to fill it up. It goes pretty well in the snow too. When I first got it there was an issue with some of the lights so I had it in for repairs. They gave me an automatic just like it to drive. I wouldn't have one. It didn't have near the power and was sluggish pulling out. I am partial to manuals though. Especially VW manuals. I just love where reverse is.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

Also, the angle and "throw" of the shifter are really nice.

(in my current car, a 5-speed Aveo, the reverse procedure is roughly similar; but the angle and throw I don't find as ergonomic as on my 1995 Jetta).

My husband's car is a 2000 Jetta - he loves it! The only problem we have is that the garage that services Volkswagons in our area isn't conveniently close; also some repairs can be pricey. He spends 2 1/2 to 3 hours a day commuting and loves the fuel economy, although diesel isn't cheaper than regular gas anymore:-). He would buy another in an instant.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

OK here is my take on the Jetta. It is nothing short then a great car. I had a 2000 TDI Diesel and I traded it in for a Torureg last year. after that and a couple trips to the gas station, I was in tears and I was so pissed I traded in a paid for car. I am still to this day regreating that deal. I figure out quickly that I could not afford the Torareg and I had to order other Jetta TDI. Even though I have a TDI now I still kinda wish I had my 2000. The stick is great but my knees are painful and the rough traffic is hard so I got a auto. I agree with the person who said that it does not accerate that quick.

So I wont get any other brand. I had one minor repair on my other one that was not my fault.

You can't go wrong with a Jetta..

A co-worker of mine had a 2003 model that had electrical problems. Have checked out Consumer Reports evaluation for that year?

Here's one website I found that has customer reviews...

ok not a Jetta but a 2001Beetle and 2001 Passat...both had problems one electrical and the other oil leaks EVERY where...repaired SEVERAL times same problem. Only resolution...get rid of and NEVER by VW again.

That is my opinion by experience, I tried VW twice not happy either time. All the bells and whistles are nice but if the vehicle is not mechanically sound, how great do you look sitting in your drive way???? ;)

The jettas they sell overseas have a fantastic reputation. I don't know how good the US Jettas are as they are made in Mexico..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
