Hi all,

I need some help. I know a woman (US citizen) who is a bit lonely who has recently met this rather shady, significantly younger man from Jamaica. There is a nearly 20 year age difference. This man is taking her for a ride financially and I can't make her see what's really going on. Recently, he started (with her knowledge and consent) using her address for filing for unemployment benefits and for filing for renewal of his I-765. He does not live at her address. I am very much afraid that this person will lead my friend into trouble/heartbreak. I know she watches this forum so I am hoping some commentary from other members here will dissuade her from what I believe to be a destructive path.

Thanks,

DerekJ

I think it is a “Someone please tell her what trouble she can be bringing onto herself by doing this as she will not take my word for it” post.

Yup....that's exactly what it is. Sorry if I was unclear. She needs to hear it from someone other than me.

If she won't listen to a friend who knows her why would she listen to complete strangers on the internet?

Because she thinks I'm jealous of this guy....we had a relationship previously and are still friends.

What is the connection to immigration here?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

NONE... If she allows someone to use her address, so be it. She is not signing any documents... The I-765 is the EAD application, and if he wants to tell the un-employment people he is living at her address, then that's between them.

Bingo....... if she cannot realise this herself, why whould she listen to complete strangers blabbering on internet.

Because sometimes it takes a knowledgeable 3rd party who has no connection and no chance of an ulterior motive to make someone realize they are going down a rocky slope.

Do you think something like that would work in such case, where person knows someone is not staying with them is using their address for claiming umemployment.

I m guessing in first place itself the person would know that they are being taken for ride by mis using the address for unemployment.

As the saying goes Love is Blind :)

I dont think ppl's opinion is going to change this person's opinion.

I'd bet the OP's friend "knows" all of the dangers of what she's getting involved in.

The problem is that she WANTS TO BELIEVE that it won't happen to her.

Nobody here can convince her of that...
