Is Vietnam a member of ASEAN? Perhaps the matter could be settled there?

Yes Vietnam is and I am sure all the member countries want peace in that region as ASEAN is economic looking. China will for sure talk to all of them but only to let them know what it is they want and expect for themselves. China wants the resources of that region and no one is going to stop them from taking it or at the least from controlling it. All of ASEAN members military forces together are minuscule compared to China's. As long as China does not at least in the near future does not invade Taiwan then the U.S. will not go to war with them. No other country can stop China from doing what they perceive is in their best interests. They need resources to keep growing. They have determined that the south China sea is their own.

Yes, they are. The issue was also brought up at the Shangri-La Dialogue with not much progress.

I know ASEAN is mostly economic group, but...

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Doesn't seem China is having any problems at all clamping down as usual.whistling.gif

Their government and people are not one. Clamping down is the only way they can stay in power. Not the first time and won't be the last.

But what? They want peace in the region or their economies take a nose dive. If China wants the south China Seas as their own and has said that it is theirs then what can they do? They even told the U.S. to mind our own business and butt out when Hillary spoke up. Even many countries outside the region have to have that sea as a transit point and want and need stability. They would welcome a single power to keep the place secure and not so many claimants. I can see if ASEAN banded together can maybe thwart China to a degree but at the risk of their economies bursting. This is China's one place that they can control a pretty sizable resource they badly need. I think ASEAN would sell Vietnam out if they had too. They will try and maybe succeed to placate Vietnam but they will bend toward China for peace.

From quite a few Chinese I know they are happy for their growing economy and the future looking so bright. They see these sometimes problems as a threat to them as well and look away when the Government clamps down. They know where the line is and don't care as long as they get theirs. Can anyone blame them?

Yes of course they are very happy but the citizens are more than happy to have so much going for them. Or they see that they do. It is easy for us here that have way more freedoms and more than simple luxuries and comfort our whole lives to see the people there as down trodden miserable souls but they are happy for their countries growing economy and their own prospects. They do not want some to rock the boat. They are spoon fed what the government tells them. The government is saying that the South seas is theirs and always has been and that some outsiders are trying to take it from THEM. No one else is allowed to say different so most believe it and is more than happy for their government to deal with them.

Besides all this is mute. The south China sea needs a Navy to control it. China has the Navy and financials and the sea is right next to it. Vietnam has very limited Navy and is poor financially. Vietnam could never invade China and China does not need to invade Vietnam to enforce its will in this matter. The U.S. has the Navy but it is far away and costly to keep a presence there always. Everyone just wants peace and stability there and China can provide it. Vietnam has not made a lot of friends in that region or anywhere for that matter. Russia could be the wild card and offset China but why would they. They want peace there also but don't like China. I wonder about India in this but they have never come up so far and doubt they want to entangle themselves in this mess.

Vietnam has no intention of invading China. It's the other way around. Whether China can enforce its will this time remains to be seen.

China is not interested in peace and stability. They're the ones that started this mess, then pointed a finger at Vietnam. Why would Vietnam want to start a war with a country that has a stronger military? That's ridiculous.

As far as U.S. presence in Asia. Secretary Robert Gates has made it clear the United States commitment to have a robust and sustaining military presence in Asia. He also states "Washington would not step back from its responsibilities to defend allies and counterbalance regional threats in Asia."

If they're so happy for their country, why are there riots every other day in China?

When was the last time you heard of anti-government rioting in Vietnam?

Its hard for me to see the US allowing China to control the south china sea. The 7th Fleet is always within range there, though their base is a little ways away in Yokosuka Prefecture. Still they keep a task force stationed in Singapore.
