Bleak jobs report dampens hopes of steady growth

WASHINGTON (AP) - A bleak jobs report suggests the recovery from the Great Recession will be longer and bumpier than many economists had envisioned.

Most economists say job growth should strengthen later this year as gasoline prices drop further and the economy recovers from the effects of natural disasters in the U.S. and abroad. But the recovery is starting to weaken 17 months before the 2012 election, which could hurt President Barack Obama's re-election prospects.

The unemployment rate in May inched up to 9.1 percent from 9 percent, the Labor Department said Friday; when Obama took office, it was 7.8 percent.

The Conference Board, a business research group, predicts the rate will be 8.5 percent at the end of next year. That would mean Obama would face a higher unemployment rate than any president running for re-election since World War II.

Somehow it is not Obama the Socialist fault. Maybe the sheep can blame China for this one.whistling.gif

Of course, this is after Obama and Democrats in Congress went off on their own, passing legislation promising to keep unemployment below 8 percent, and when that failed, they say, "Oh, it could have been worse."

Right.

LOL. The worse part is that they are now huddling trying to figure out how many more Trillions are needed to fix this. Has to be the most clueless morons in history and historically there have been some pretty big morons.blink.gif

It's a little early in the game for the conclusion in the title of this thread.

How can you think it has no dampening effect?

I for one though for sure the economy would have turned around by now.. despite his misguided actions, now time is running out for him.

Can anyone name me three areas or themes for a re=election campaign?

1. He gets credit for bagging Bin laddin.

2.?

3.?

Because Obama has no distinct opponent and because the average American voter hasn't got a 17-month attention span. If this was June 2012, it would be a little different, but it's not. We're way too far out for this particular piece of news to make one iota of difference.

17 months? Try a mere attention span in itself. Many people seem to miss the obvious obstructionism present mostly (but not completely) by the President's opposition. One thing is to debate, another is to stand in the way. If they're so sure the President's agenda would be so destructive to America, the GOP's best bet would have been to let it happen so they could be ushered in with massive victories in future election cycles. Add to that the clear idiocy of an irrational belief system that meshes more with rumors and psychotic babble than with actual fact and you can see why nothing gets done in DC.

Well, after a comparatively mild recession - based on the traditional standard of two consequtive quarters with negative growth it wasn't even a recession - here was President George W Bush looking at the unemployment rate peaking in June of 2003. The economy had shed over 2.3 million jobs thus far under his watch and not seen any sustained job growth until September 2003. And somehow, magically, he was re-elected in 2004. Odd, ain't it?

And how has Obama'a net loss of 5 million jobs in less than half that time been accounted for in your equation?

They have to prove their point. Otherwise its all about the votes.

Assuming its all due to his efforts only. Which of course, it isn't.
