Hi VJ'ers I was wondering what exactly gets done during the medical exam that has to be done before the interview. I know my fiance will need to bring his vaccination records, but is there anything else he needs to be worried about? Also does anyone know if they do drug testing? He recently returned from Amsterdam (enough said there)

Thanks for your reponses!

For medical exams, they do an X-ray and bloodtests to make sure you don't have Syphillis or HIV.. and if you have any of those or any abnormalities in bloodwork, you need a note written from your doctor on the status of the condition of the time (God Forbid)

Other than that, it's just like a physical exam..

I'm panicking because I haaate bloodwork, haha.

This might help a bit, it's a Vancouver medical clinic and these are the req's as well as what they do during your medical examination.

There are many write-ups of medical exams in London. It's a pinned topic in the UK forum. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/99-united-kingdom/ Jump in at the more recent ones (2011) since it's a really long thread. People decribe everything that happened there.

They don't do drug testing unless they suspect it. There is a question if he's ever done drugs. He would obviously have to say yes to this question and this means he may be denied. He'll probably have to see a psychologist to determine if this is a full-on addiction.

If he says no to the question and it's found that he lied... who knows how, they might never find out but on the off chance they do... then he will get a lifetime ban for misrepresentation and deported. Even after getting his GC and even after becoming a citizen this can come back to bite him.

It's not good that he's into drugs but I'm sure you knew that.

I love this community thank you so much to all of you for your responses! I was worried about it possibly affecting his approval/denial. As far as marijuana is concerned, I would be doing the same thing if I was in Amsterdam, it is legal there! That's another discussion though thank you all again! Best of luck in your journeys!

Oh I would be so mad! He should have foregone the fun in Amsterdam until after the medical. Having issues with drug use at your visa medical is a big deal.

Anyway. As previous poster said, they do ask. It's up to him what he tells them. It is a big risk if he lies when it might still be in his system.

If this were me...I would hold off on the medical. It doesn't have to be done prior to the interview but the Visa cannot be issued without it so it would hold things up. I guess it depends on how much of a rush you guys are in?

Good luck!!

PS: It doesn't make a difference that the Laws are different in Amsterdam.

Thank you Helen, I do understand the implications of his actions! I feel like I'm being lectured by my parents right now :bonk:

We are waiting for the copies of my paperwork to arrive in the UK and then he will schedule the medical. I don't think we will have to worry he was there several weeks ago & from what I am reading it goes out of your system in just over a month. Cheers! :star:

Cool beans. Several weeks should be fine.

The Doctor I saw commented and took a note about my physical appearance. (I am 5ft10 and thin), she told me they are bound to record anything they think is relevant about what they see. She noted this about me because my Blood Pressure was low which is not uncommon in someone of my body type.

Just a thought. They are 'checking you out' as well as performing their tests.

The medical is a breeze though. An XRay, a few tests, an exam and a chat with the Doctor. (and a couple hundred pounds of course)

Good luck!

I feel like I'm being lectured by my parents right now :bonk:

Well I feel good that I didn't lecture and I'm the old one here. :P

On the questionaire it says: Have you ever misused or abused drugs?

A little recreation in Amsterdam is not misuse or abuse in my book. Taking way too many pain pills for months/years while drinking too much alcohol comes to mind. Getting addicted to prescription meds so you can sleep, but needing uppers to function the next day sounds abusive. Having gone into rehab to get off drugs would warrant a yes to the question.

Anyway, they do not routinely do screenings for drugs. I know of one case where a guy went to his interview after smoking weed late into the night before at his hotel. The CO thought he was acting stoned and sent him straight out to a drug screening. Another guy was being a smart@ss with the Knightsbridge doc who asked how much he drank on a typical evening at the pub. He said something like he could put back 10 or 15 pints in an evening. His fiance claimed he was just popping off and maybe had 10 pints in a week. Well he got sent for a private psyciatric evaluation to determine if he was addicted to alcohol. The evaluations had to go to the US for a ruling whether he was admissable. I don't know if he ever got the visa. How you act and what you say can have repercussions.

Unless I am wrong, London WILL not give an interview without a passed medical. They give interview dates 2 weeks after receiving results. I have been told this by them, and have read this.

My fiancee's medical was quite pleasant. The doctor was nice and was training another female doctor. She was forthcoming with information and commented to him that she saw no reason why he'd be denied a visa. He felt it an easy experience. They did carefully question any "yes" answers, but allowed explanations. Ours was 5/13/11.

You are correct. http://london.usembassy.gov/immigrant-visas/medical-examination.html

Apologies. Just shows you how quickly things change in the world of immigration! :) I was going through this in September/October 2010 and my interview was scheduled before my medical was.

Looks like the OP was not planning to do this anyways.

Thanks!

He DID do drugs and therefore needs to answer yes when asked if he's ever done drugs.. unless you're planning on lying which if discovered is a lifetime ban but even admitting it means he'll have to do a psych eval. Of course this is all worst case scenario but it has and does happen.

You should also know that USCIS has been known to check this site. You have just posted (with a photo of yourself and your fiance) that he did drugs. They have actually greeted people at their interviews with their VJ screen name. He's lucky being British he doesn't have an Amsterdam stamp in his passport or that's a "drugs" flag to them right there.

Don't get too freaked out Jenny. I've never ever heard of London calling anybody by their VJ name or giving any indication that they had checked them out. That was a story out of Montreal or Vancouver Canada. It's still a good point to be aware of your online privacy. USCIS did admit that they check social media like Facebook at times when adjudicating adjustment of status cases to find clues about the couple and the validity of their marriage.
