Hey

I was wondering, i wanted my brother in law who just finished HS to come to the US for an education in college, for his bachelors. How would i go about this? how could he then become a permanent resident here? Any options would be great. Thank you

He first needs to apply and be accepted into an accredited US university and show he and enough money to support himself. he would then need to apply for a student visa showing that he intends to return to his homecountry - this is a requirement because an F-1 student visa is a non-immigrant visa

There is no path from student visa to permenant resident

however, after his studies he may be able to get employment sponsorship and then permenant residence through employment

Or marriage...

Good luck

Can students that finish high school generally get into a university/community college in the US pretty easily?

Depends on the college and the that specific college's requirements

no one can say generally that foreign students can get into a US university

Good luck

I have many foreign friends who have been in the US continuously for 5-10 years on student visas, getting their Bachelor's, Master's and in some cases PhDs here all in a row. However, the non-immigrant intent clause always applies to a student visa, so it should not be seen as a means to a green card. He can come to study here under F1 if he gets into a school and meets all the visa requirements, and when he is getting close to completing that degree, he can always re-evaluate the situation and if he wants to and it makes sense to him, he can apply to another program and apply for a new student visa. Don't plan on using the F1 as a route to green card though, because it is not. He can only get a green card if an employer would be willing to sponsor him at some point, or if he got married to a USC. F1 is for studying and for non-immigrant purposes.

Or if the Dream Act goes through. Which is highly unlikely. Congress was just discussing whether or not to let student visa holders adjust status. why educate folks with our resources and then send them packing? didn't pass though =/

There are so many universities here in the US its hard to say whether its easy or hard. It depends on your brother's grades and general mission in life. US students apply to up to 9-12 schools for the undergraduate programs. He needs to know what discipline he wants to study and write persuasively about why the university is a good match for him.

your brother needs to complete his HSC in India and then apply for Univ here for Bachs degree.

Most Indians dont apply for Bach here as it is more expensive, so you should be able to show he has enough funding to cover his studies.

There is no direct path to GC from student visa, once he grads he will have to look for a job and then employeer files for his GC.

do you guys know if theres any financial aid for international students or its all out of pocket?

Let's reverse this question is there any finical aid in India if an US immigrate wanted to go to a college in India, will the Indian government pay for a US citizen to go to college there just because he/she wanted? Just a thought?

Or if the Dream Act goes through.

You really need to read up on the DREAM Act before posting stuff like that.

The DREAM Act in any of its proposed forms is for people who were brought to the US by their parents as children. If the O.P.'s brother enters the US on a student visa, he wouldn't be eligible for the DREAM Act even if he were to marry one of President Obama's daughters.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

financial aid is limited to USC and LPR.

financial expectations are the cost of tuition (non-resident rate is always higher), living expenses, and travel expenses for the duration of study. he should be able to get a certificate from any smaller indian bank saying that he has funds equal to that on deposit for a bribe of about 3-5% of face value, without having any actual deposit. then he can live with his cousin and work illegally under the table in a donut shop to pay tuition quarterly. just be sure he avoids the prostitutes or he'll wind up over on immigtate2us.net trying to figure out how to avoid being deported for CIMT.

Before you are even accepted, he'll need to show finances and ability to support himself. When I applied I had to show $20,000 in my bank. I was able to get financial aid through Canada, the US wouldn't touch an immigrant because of their inobligation to pay it back (obviously they see an immigrant and leaving the country). Out of state tuition is about 5 times what it is for an in-state student. I suggest your brother in law begins researching the school he wants to go to and find their requirements

Good luck

Your BIL would not be eligible for any kind of financial aid, it’s a common sense question if every foreign student was getting aid whole of the world would be here for college.

He could get a financial assistance ship that’s normally only for the Masters or PHD student, not for undergrad students.

He could get some financial aid if he is exceptionally good in academics, but don’t expect anything from State or Federal govt.
