Is this thread dying in Off-Topic?

Maybe better off in Politics/Religion?

I guess the end of the world is becoming increasingly blasé...

I used to know a guy in Pamona, CA that would carry a sign like that. He'd walk up and down Route 66 all the live long day. Meth really screwed that guys head up!

He also took quite a shine to Cindy Crawford and was issued a restraining order after he had an engagement ring delivered to her. What a character,

As 21 May approaches there may or may not be a media frenzy; depends on if it's an otherwise slow news day...

There's Vietnamese street preacher that runs around the "Backpacker District" here in Saigon/HCMC. I bet he's going to work himself up into a frenzy. He was "re-educated" from 1975-77. I suspect that was were he found Jesus.

Super Bowl Monday (it started at about 8am here) I was down there watching the game. It was standing room only with many watching outside, in an alley. I was at the back, when I glanced down the alley and saw him coming. "This is going to be good" I thought and I was right. He stepped up and, with everyone's eyes on the game, he yells "JESUS! "ONE DAY YOU DIE"..."KICK BUCKET"..."YOU GO TO HEAVEN'..."THEY SAY..NO!"..."GO AWAY"..."YOU BAD!" He scared the sh!t out of about 100 expats and I almost fell down laughing! One American started giving him a hard time, so I went up to him and politely asked him to give the guy a break and told him about the re-education. He was about 25 and 6'5 to my 44 and 6", but I wasn't real worried about it. I had a stern lecture about how we, as Americans, don't like to see religion being suppressed. Much to my disappointment he chose to mumble about how he wanted to enjoy the game and John the Baptist", as I call him, scurried off to save someone else. He knew he had stumbled upon a batch of hopeless cases, I assume.

If there's one thing I never thought I'd see here, it's a street preacher and though I don't consider myself Christian I sorta' admire the guys moxie and respect the fact that he did 2 years.

Are you working in VN or just visiting? I was thinking of VN as a possible side trip during our upcoming

one month stay in Thailand this summer. Any suggestions of must-see/do stuff?

I heard an interview on NPR about this guy - or actually a whole group of people - who are saying the world will end on May 21st. He states he has calculated it carefully using biblical sources and mathematics. He had actually made a previous prediction of the world ending back in the late 80s or something like that. When it didn't happen he said it was because he was missing some vital information that affected his calculations and he now has that.

His version is that the earth will erupt into a earth-wide earthquake - starting with the New Madrid fault and then spreading everywhere at once - and the earth will literally fall apart. There are apparently enough of his followers convinced that this will happen that they have sold or given away everything they own as they see no need for it after May 21st. They expect that these few 'believers' will be raptured into Heaven as the earth is being destroyed.

My question is that if the earth is being destroyed anyway and you aren't going to be here anyway, then why worry about selling off or giving away your personal belongings? You won't be able to take them with you and no one else will be using them after the earth is destroyed - so why not just let it all remain intact until the very end?

btw - I have plans for that day as well so I will not be participating in the end of the world, either. :)

The New Madrid fault line, though, is a totally different story and is somewhat over-due for a big trembler. It wouldn't be the end of the world, just the end of life as they knew it for many if that occurs.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Been here 2.25 years and counting. I haven't been there yet, but Halong Bay looks like a must see:

You're right about that. The last time it went off they felt it in Boston and a big portion of the Mississippi switched course and ran north for a while! A similar quake could decimate a number of cities.

Kirk Cameron hasn't weighed in. He hasn't been heard from since CNN talked to him about the dead bird/end of world connection when he proclaimed it wasn't the end of the world. Maybe he was wrong and the rapture has happened, but we're unaware? I'll call my sister. If she's still here then it hasn't.
